The earliest Christians thought of themselves in communal terms. They did not simply make individual commitments to Jesus as God's messiah; they constituted themselves as communities shaped by the in-breaking of God's realm. They likely learned to do so from Jesus himself. When he summoned an inner circle of his followers and numbered them twelve, he signaled that his ministry had the character of a reform movement within Israel. In his work of preaching, healing, exorcism, and prophetic sign actions, Jesus shaped his followers into what would eventually become the church. By transgressing contemporary religious and social boundaries in his ministry, he planted the seeds of the church's later inclusion of non-Jews. This book will investigate New Testament texts about the church from a comparative standpoint. That is, the various authors adopt different metaphors for their communities-family, assembly, nation, priesthood, and so on--to make varying claims about how they ought to live together and how they ought to live among their neighbors. In their descriptions of themselves as the church, Christians implicitly and explicitly describe their theology but also the Roman empire, the Jerusalem temple, the synagogue, popular philosophical circles, and first-century domestic order.

The first part of the book explains the antecedent probability both of revelation and of God’s institution of a church. It is ecclesiology in the mode of fundamental theology. The second part rounds up what Scripture and Tradition teach about the Church under the heads of the People of God, the Temple of the Holy Spirit, the Bride of Christ, and the Body of Christ. The chapters present this thematic material under each head as a unified whole, across the Testaments, with each chapter keyed to one of the “marks” of the Church: the catholicity of the people of God, the apostolicity of the ministers of the messianic temple, the holiness of the Bride of Christ, and the unity of the Body of Christ. This already organizes things in a proto-systematic frame. The third part of the book gives systematic exploration, in reverse order, to the unity of the Church, with attention to non-Catholic ecclesial communities and churches, to the holiness of the Church, objective and subjective, to the apostolicity of the Church and her mediation of revealed truth and grace, and to the catholicity of the Church, with attention to non-Christian religions. The center of the book, on the definition of the Church as the sacrament of communion, renders recent French Dominican ecclesiology in a form more accessible to undergraduates and seminarians, rooting it in the New Testament teachings on communion and mysterion. The book concludes with a strenuous argument for the necessity of the Church and her mission of evangelization. Thus, the trajectory of the book is from the naturally knowable antecedent probability of the Church to its revealed necessity.

During the last few decades there has been a debate concerning the prominence of ecclesiology in the Gospel of John. This book highlights that debate and makes an important contribution to our understanding of Johannine ecclesiology. It argues that ecclesiology is a major theological concern of the Gospel, that investigations into Johannine ecclesiology have suffered under categories that are alien to the Gospel itself, and that the Gospel espouses a christological ecclesiology that emphasizes the origin, nature and purpose of the community. The community is Christus prolongatus; Christology and ecclesiology overlap. In addition, the book makes several new suggestions: that the prayer of the Johannine Jesus in John 17 has its origin (Sitz im Leben) in the 'law-court' petitionary prayers of the Johannine community in its conflict with the synagogue; that the Johannine concept of glory has to be understood in soteriological terms and is closely related to the Johannine community's sense of mission; and that the Johannine concept of sending reflects a gnostic sending tradition that was current in first-century Palestine.

In her remarkable first book, God Dwells With Us: Temple Symbolism in the Fourth Gospel, Mary L. Coloe, P.B.V.M., explored the profound insight of John's Gospel expressed in Jesus ' invitation to his disciples: Make your home in me, as I make mine in you (John 15:4). For the gospel's author and audience, the dwelling of God among humans was, above al, the Jerusalem Temple. The gospel traces how 'after the trauma of the destruction of the Temple 'the Johannine community came to expand and deepen its knowledge of God's dwelling among humans, finding it now in the person of Jesus and in the community of believers. Dwelling in the Household of God moves us from seeing God's dwelling place as the Temple to seeing God's dwelling place within the community of believers. The starting point now is an image in John 14:2: my Father's house, which is given its Old Testament meaning of my father's household. Our awareness thus moves, like that of the first Christians, from understanding My father's house as the Temple (John 2:16) to My Father's Household as a community of believers drawn into Jesus ' own divine filiation. What emerges is nothing less than a profound mysticism of the mutual indwelling of God and believers.
