Book Description
Social psychology has a profound influence on our everyday lives; from our shopping habits to our interactions at a party. It seeks to answer questions that we often think and talk about; questions such as: - What circumstances prompt people to help, or not to help? - What factors influence the ups and downs of our close relationships? - Why do some people behave differently when on their own compared to in a group? - What leads individuals sometimes to hurt, and other times to help one another? - Why are we attracted to certain types of people? - How do some persuade others to do what they want? This new edition of Social Psychology has been revised to introduce a more flexible structure for teaching and studying. It includes up-to-date, international research with an emphasis throughout on its critical evaluation. Applied examples across the chapters help to highlight the relevance, and hence the impact, that the theories and methods of this fascinating subject have upon the social world. Key Features Include: - Research Close-Up: Following a brand-new style, this feature matches the layout used in research papers, providing an accessible introduction to journal articles and the research methods used by social psychologists. - Focus On: Fully revised, these boxes look at opposing viewpoints, controversial research or alternative approaches to the topics. This offers a more critical outlook and prompts the questioning of the validity of published research - Recommended Readings: New to this edition, recommended further readings of both classic and contemporary literature have been added to each chapter, providing a springboard for further consideration of the topics. Book Description
This edited collection presents seven recent studies in contemporary cognitive neuroscience which have come to be viewed as classic experiments. The contributing authors are renowned in their field for producing intelligent and innovative research, and together they cover each of the main sub-disciplines of cognitive neuroscience. As well as the original study, and a description of the methodology and results, each chapter includes a personal commentary by the author of the study in which they share unique insights into the genesis of the idea, the 'how to' of carrying out scientific research and a summary of the most important results. In addition, leading figures discuss the impact of the study, how it advanced research in the area and the influence it has had on their own and others' experimental designs and research activities. By illustrating the scope for creativity that exists in the process of experimental design, the authors encourage you to innovate and design creative approaches to experiments that address major theoretical issues or solve specific problems. This is important reading for students of psychology and cognitive neuroscience. Contributors: Charles W. Anderson, Niels Birbaumer, Seán Commins, James Danckert, Beatrice de Gelder, Paul Dockree, Luciano Fadiga, Gereon Fink, John Foxe, Eleanor Maguire, Shane O'Mara. Alvaro Pascual-Leone, V.S. Ramachandran, Lynn Robertson, Richard A.P. Roche, Giuseppe Vallar, Vincent Walsh

Book Description
This book expertly guides the reader through all stages involved in undertaking quantitative psychological research, from accessing the relevant literature, through designing and conducting a study, analysing and interpreting data, and finally reporting the research. This third edition includes two new chapters - on preliminary checking of data and allowing for additional variables when comparing the means of different conditions - and expands on original topics such as choosing sample sizes and how to test for mediation effects. It also contains increased coverage of tests and further detail of techniques and terms which psychologists will meet when working with those in the medical professions. As the chapters focus on choosing appropriate statistical tests and how to interpret and report them (rather than the detailed calculations, which appear in appendices), the reader is able to gain an understanding of a test without being interrupted by the need to understand the complex mathematics behind it. In addition, for the first time, the book is accompanied by an online bank of multiple choice questions. The book helps readers to: Locate reports of relevant existing research Design research while adhering to ethical principles Identify various methods which can be used to ask questions or observe behaviour Choose appropriate samples Display and analyse findings numerically and graphically to test hypotheses Report psychological research in a variety of ways. As such, the book is suitable for psychology students and professionals at all levels, and is particularly useful to those working in Health and Clinical Psychology.

Book Description
This Modified eBook version of The Broadview Anthology of British Literature: Concise Volume B, 3rd edition omits in-copyright readings that are found in the print book. This ebook is available for purchase in the UK and select international markets. The two-volume Broadview Anthology of British Literature: Concise Edition provides an attractive alternative to the full six-volume anthology. Though much more compact, the Concise Edition nevertheless provides substantial choice, offering both a strong selection of canonical authors and a sampling of lesser-known works. With an unparalleled selection of illustrations and of contextual materials, accessible and engaging introductions, and full explanatory annotations, these volumes provide concise yet extraordinarily wide-ranging coverage for British Literature survey courses. New to this volume are Samuel Beckett’s Endgame and Robert Louis Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde; new authors include Dorothy Wordsworth, John Clare, Tomson Highway, Derek Walcott, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The third edition now also offers substantially expanded representation of Irish, Scottish, and Welsh literatures, as well as contextual materials on Gothic literature, Modernism, and World War II. Material that no longer appears in the bound book may in most cases be found on the companion website; many larger works are also available in separate volumes that may at the instructor’s request be bundled together with the anthology at no extra cost to the student.
