Book Description
Among the Yoru ba of Southwestern Nigeria, Ifa divination is a major source or means of diagnosing and detecting diseases. Ebo is considered to be the core of Ifa divination system mode of healing and solving problems and forms the nucleus of all other healing system. The study reported in this book examined the pivotal roles that Ebo plays in the healing process with a view to understanding its therapeutic potentials. The study was premised on Franz Boa's theory of ethno science which considers cultural relativism as an approach to understanding indigenous scientific practices. Participant observation was used in gathering data from both the clients and babala wo (Ifa priests). Collected data were content analyzed. The study provides better understanding of efficacy of Ebo as a therapeutic mechanism for the treatment and curing of illnesses such as infertility, impotence, headache, mental illness, spiritual attacks, etc. Ebo is thus very crucial to Ifa divination as a healing technique. Cooperation between traditional and orthodox practitioners is advocated.Future research into Ebo as a therapeutic tool could be undertaken using cosmology and phenomenology theories.

Book Description
Within the West African cultural spirituality of the Yoruba, Ela is known as the Spirit of Light and Manifestation meaning all things came into existence here on Ikole Aye (Earth) by way of Ela. Ela can also be summarized as the Holy Spirit of Ifa and interchangeably used as another name for Orunmila Elerin Ipin Ibikeji Olodumare (Orunmila, Withness of Creation, Second to the Creator). It is by way of Ela that Ifa became acceptable throughout the world and Orunmila accepted by followers, including followers in secret. In “Ela, The Ifa Concept of Altered States”, Awo Falokun opens the dialogue once again on how devotees can continue to seat Ifa in the West. His approach to the subject of Ela is not the way, but a way to create and maintain Extended Family and Community. Knowledge of Ela and the Orisa is not enough – through the possession (spiritual access to the wisdom) of Ela, Ifa devotees can begin to heal ourselves of the negative influences of the Western World View, past and present, and heal the Ifa Community and the world around us.In this book, Awo Falokun teaches that the basis of Traditional Yoruba Spirituality is Good Character, which is accessible through Ela, and how it is essential to go into possession with the Spirit of Orunmila in order to maintain good character and banish the negative forces that create ori buruku, i.e., gossip, jealousy, lying, stealing, violence, etc.

Book Description
This volume honours one of the great scholars of our era, Professor Jacob Olupona. Although he has conducted significant portions of his career outside of Nigeria, he has not separated himself from his colleagues or from interests in religions in Nigeria and elsewhere in Africa. His publications and presentations offer the international scholarly community important critical insights into a range of religious activities, life ways and ideas originating in Africans and the African Diaspora. In spite of the diversity in the thoughts and opinions expressed, and equally of the range of disciplines and topics contained in the book, one can say that the contributors have developed a shared concern about the role of African Indigenous Religious Traditions in the processes of development and the context within which it (development) had or is taking place. The book guides us to a deep understanding and appreciation of how Africans in their varied situations grapple with existential problems through philosophical ruminations, complex ritual processes, cultivated memory and organized coping strategies.
