How we produce and consume food has a bigger impact on Americans' well-being than any other human activity. The food industry is the largest sector of our economy; food touches everything from our health to the environment, climate change, economic inequality, and the federal budget. From the earliest developments of agriculture, a major goal has been to attain sufficient foods that provide the energy and the nutrients needed for a healthy, active life. Over time, food production, processing, marketing, and consumption have evolved and become highly complex. The challenges of improving the food system in the 21st century will require systemic approaches that take full account of social, economic, ecological, and evolutionary factors. Policy or business interventions involving a segment of the food system often have consequences beyond the original issue the intervention was meant to address. A Framework for Assessing Effects of the Food System develops an analytical framework for assessing effects associated with the ways in which food is grown, processed, distributed, marketed, retailed, and consumed in the United States. The framework will allow users to recognize effects across the full food system, consider all domains and dimensions of effects, account for systems dynamics and complexities, and choose appropriate methods for analysis. This report provides example applications of the framework based on complex questions that are currently under debate: consumption of a healthy and safe diet, food security, animal welfare, and preserving the environment and its resources. A Framework for Assessing Effects of the Food System describes the U.S. food system and provides a brief history of its evolution into the current system. This report identifies some of the real and potential implications of the current system in terms of its health, environmental, and socioeconomic effects along with a sense for the complexities of the system, potential metrics, and some of the data needs that are required to assess the effects. The overview of the food system and the framework described in this report will be an essential resource for decision makers, researchers, and others to examine the possible impacts of alternative policies or agricultural or food processing practices.

The dangers of eating fish are often blithely overlooked even though the consumption of fish can severely comprised your overall health. The bodies of fish are replete with toxic chemicals which they assimilate from the tainted water that they are submerged in and transverse through. "Fish flesh stores contaminants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls, which cause liver damage, nervous system disorders, and fetal damage. Dioxins, also linked to cancer; radioactive substances like strontium 90; and other dangerous contaminants like cadmium, mercury, lead, chromium, and arsenic, can cause health problems ranging from kidney damage and impaired mental development to cancer. These toxins are stored in the body fat of humans who eat fish and remain in their bodies for decades" ("Think Fish Is," 2010). The consumption of fish can precipitate the onset of chronic diseases, such as cancer. The consumption of fish renders someone at risk for contracting food poisoning. "Seafood is the number one cause of food poisoning in the United States. Seafood poisoning can result in extreme discomfort, kidney damage, nervous system damage, and even death. Many of the waterways are polluted with human and animal feces, and this waste carries dangerous bacteria like E. coli" ("Think Fish Is," 2010). Fish are not only replete with heavy metals, but are also tainted with noxious contaminants. The consumption of fish carcasses renders someone at "grave risk of contracting a nasty bacterial illness" ("Think Fish Is") which cannot only induce extreme discomfort, but can also lead to comprised nervous system health. The consumption of fish creates a recipe for drawing forth inflammation and eliciting a host of undesirable health issues which become all the more calamitous when the fish that you are needlessly devouring have been bred in highly polluted waters. Moreover, the consumption of animal proteins from fish and animals fats can be detrimental to the individual's overall health and longevity. The consumption of fish is deleterious and cancer promoting since it is able to amplify secretion output "levels of the hormone IGF-1. IGF-1 stimulates cell division and growth, and it is associated with cancer proliferation and malignancy. The role of IGF-1 in cancer promotion is well understood, and animal protein, including fish, is associated with increased circulating levels of this hormone" (Ochoa, 2015). Health conscious individuals should profusely understand that they are all the more apt to cultivate a life threatening tumor inside themselves by eating fish. Fish are also chock full of cholesterol. Foods that contain cholesterol should be omitted from the diet since they are cardiovascular disease promoting foods. "As humans, we do not need to eat any cholesterol in our diets, as our bodies synthesize all the cholesterol we need" (Ochoa).
