East Kalimantan
Author: Burhan Djabier Magenda
Publisher: Equinox Publishing
ISBN: 6028397210
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 166
Book Description
In recent studies of Indonesia's regional politics one important aspect has largely been neglected - the role of the local aristocracies which dominated many of the regions outside Java from the precolonial period through to the formation of the independent Republic of Indonesia in 1949. In his work Burhan Magenda has begun to remedy this neglect. He has studied the aristocracies in various regions of the Outer Islands from the colonial period through into the New Order government of President Suharto. In covering their history he has examined the strategies used by the local aristocrats to survive and attempt to continue their domination of political power in their regions. The focus of this present monograph is East Kalimantan, where the local aristocracy was commercial in nature, tracing its origin back to the establishment of a "spice trade" route in the sixteenth century. The decline in the nineteenth century of the main harbor principality of Borneo, Banjarmasin on the south coast, opened the way for other states on the island to play a greater role, in particular the sultanate of Kutai in eastern Borneo. Burhan Magenda's well documented study opens a new perspective of fundamental importance to our understanding of both the past and current political and economic development of East Kalimantan and of its relationship with the central power in Jakarta. It provides an illuminating analysis of strategies by which members of the aristocracy have succeeded in surviving under widely varying conditions. Clearly, despite the challenges they have encountered over the past 45 years, these aristocrats have shown a surprising political resilience. - Audrey Kahin Ithaca, August 1991

THE ORGANIZATION AND ORDER OF BATTLE OF MILITARIES IN WORLD WAR II
Author: Charles D. Pettibone
Publisher: Trafford Publishing
ISBN: 1490733876
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 613
Book Description
There are numerous Order of Battle books on the market. So what makes this one so special? Why should one decide on this particular book? Most Order of Battle books usually deal only with the division and corps level of a country’s army. Most higher commands are not covered. This book deals with all the branches of a country’s military, giving a breakdown of all the major echelons of command, from theater down to brigade, under each component (army group, armies, corps, division, and brigade), and the equivalent command structure for the other military branches are included. Second, it attempts to give an overall command structure of the country’s military, showing the central headquarters command structure as well as the major components (army groups, armies, corps, etc.) Third, most Order of Battle books list the commanders and their dates of tenure. This book includes those but also lists their next duty assignments or where they went after leaving the post. One can literally trace a general officer’s career through the upper echelons of command, making this completely different from all the other Order of Battle books on the market.

Dipterocarp Forest Ecosystems: Towards Sustainable Management
Author: Andreas Schulte
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814498750
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 682
Book Description
The Dipterocarp forests of South-East Asia constitute a dominant component of the world's tropical forests. As such, they are intertwined with a Pandora's box of problems that have plagued the world for decades; Over- and underdevelopment, poverty, hunger, population growth, exploitation of natural resources, environmental degradation, loss of biodiversity, the debt crisis and, of late, climate change. The world community has responded to the crucial role of these forests and the dangers facing them with funds, and a myriad of programmers, projects, institutions, conferences and networks. Apparently neither a lack of knowledge nor finance constrains the dissipation of sustainable management practices: the fate of the world's Dipterocarp forests will certainly depend on the involvement of scientists from many nations and disciplines, but will perhaps ultimately, rest with local policymakers, forest administrators and line foresters. Unfortunately, these two groups rarely share realms, readings or reasoning: practical foresters, invariably very involved with the challenges of day-to-day forest management in remote, isolated environments, may long remain oblivious to scientific developments. Traditionally though they do find solutions to problems, gain deep insights into forest responses and practical constraints, and sometimes even report in semi-obscure publications, which rarely reach the scientific circuit. The editors of the book, both experienced forest and soil scientists and practical forest managers, have attempted to bridge the gap between the realms of forest science and practice in Dipterocarp ecology, management and utilization.
