External powers, including the United States and China, have ramped up engagement with Southeast Asia and now compete for influence in the region. In late 2019, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) conducted a survey of strategic elites in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand as well as Fiji to understand how the region views trends related to power, norms, and institutions.
