The second volume of "Early Writings" by J.L. Vives collects seven opuscula written during Vives' student years in Paris, namely the Life of his master J. Dullardus of Ghent, a letter to his friend J. Fortis, three pious treatises ("Triumphus Christi; Clypeus Christi; Ovatio Mariae") and finally, two inaugural lectures to courses on Ad Herennium and Filelfo's Convivia. Except for the Life and the letter, all these texts appear here for the first time in critical editions accompanied by an English translation and explanatory notes. Since Vives used to rewrite his texts for later editions some of the texts are published here in parallel versions. The easy comparison of the two texts will allow scholars to gain a better insight into the linguistic and intellectual development of young Vives in the years between the two versions. The English translation will make understandable the often very obscure originals. By studying these early writings, it is shown that Vives' knowledge of Latin in Paris was still very modest and that he obviously had serious problems in formulating his thoughts adequately.

Poems and other texts from the 1960s by a pioneering conceptual artist that show a continuity with his subsequent work in performance and video art. Pioneering conceptual artist Vito Acconci began his career as a poet. In the 1960s, before beginning his work in performance and video art, Acconci studied at the Iowa Writers Workshop and published poems in journals and chapbooks. Almost all of this work remains unknown; much of it appeared in the self-produced magazines of the Lower East Side's mimeo revolution, and many other pieces were never published. Language to Cover a Page collects these writings for the first time and not only shows Acconci to be an important experimental writer of the period, but demonstrates the continuity of his early writing with his later work in film, video, and performance. Language to Cover a Page documents a key moment in the unprecedented intersection of artists and poets in the late 1960s -- as seen in the Dwan Gallery's series of "Language" shows (1967-1970) and in Acconci's own journal 0 to 9. Indeed, as Acconci moved from the poetry scene to the art world, his poetry became increasingly performative while his artwork was often structured and motivated by linguistic play. Acconci's early writing recalls the work of Samuel Beckett, the deadpan voice of the nouveau roman, and the jump cuts and fraught permutations of the nouvelle vague. The primary intent of this volume is to give the English reader access to all the philosophical texts published by Husserl between the appearance of his first book, Philosophie der Arithmetik, and that of his second book, Logische Untersuchungen- roughly, from 1890 through 1901. Along with these texts we have included a number of unpublished manuscripts from the same period and dealing with the same or closely related topics. A few of the texts here translated (the review of Pahigyi, the five "report" articles of 1903-1904, the "notes" in Lalande's Vocabulaire, and the brief discussion. article on Marty of 1910) obviously fall outside this time period, so far as their publication dates are concerned; but in content they seem clearly confined to it. The final piece translated, a set of personal notes that date from 1906 through 1908, provides insight into how Husserl experienced his early labors and their results, and into how he saw their relation to work before him: a phenomenological critique of reason in all of its forms. Thus the texts here translated - which obviously are to be read in conjunction with his first two books - cover the progression of Husserl's Problematik from the relatively narrow one of clarifying the epistemic structure of general arithmetic, to the all-encompassing one of establishing in principle, through phenomenological research, the line between legitimate and illegitimate claims to know or to be rational, regardless of the domain concerned.
