D. 1153 IN 1800 the deputy-keeper of the Records of Scotland suggested the publication of the Royal charters granted prior to the reign of Robert the Bruce, and in 1814 it was stated in the Preface to the Register of the Great Seal that some progress had been made in the work, but it was abandoned, and now more than a hundred years later I have endeavoured to collect the charters and other documents written in Scotland, or by or to Scotsmen, prior to the death of David I. In II 53. The task has been comparatively easy, because nearly all the charters, etc., had been printed, one hundred and thirty-four in chartularies by the Bannatyne Club, fourteen by the Maitland Club, six by the Spalding Club, five by the Grampian Club, and others by the Surtees Society and the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.
