The Croatian medieval archaeological heritage from the 8th to the 15th century consists mostly of jewelry (earrings) findings from cemeteries. This book uses vertical and horizontal stratigraphy, on the basis of around 20,000 burial assemblages from 16 cemeteries (out of several hundred so far excavated in Croatia), to establish relative and absolute chronology of jewelry and burial architecture divided into three horizons and four phases in comparison with materials from neighboring regions of Europe.

Pričujoča knjiga je nastala z namenom, da odgovori na vprašanje: ali je v arheoloških virih izpričano predkrščansko svetišče na Blejskem otoku? Blejski otok je imel poseben pomen za vsako lokalno skupnost, ki je kadarkoli živela ob Blejskem jezeru. Pisanje J. V. Valvasorja in A. T. Linharta je sloves otoka poneslo širše, dokončno pa ga je usidral v kulturno zavest Slovencev France Prešeren, ki je na otok v pesmi Krst pri Savici postavil Živin hram. Arheologija, kot vsaka znanost, zahteva kompleksen pristop. V knjigi je predstavljena arheološka analiza dokumentacije izkopavanj, ki so bila na Blejskem otoku med letoma 1962 in 1965. Takrat je pod vodstvom Vinka Šribarja ekipa Narodnega muzeja Slovenije raziskali grobišče in ostanke cerkvenih zidov iz srednjega veka. Najdišče je eno od številnih v blejski mikro-regiji, a je kot kraj – otok na jezeru – posebnost med najdišči v Sloveniji. Obsežno nalogo smo si razdelili sodelavci ZRC SAZU in Narodnega muzeja Slovenije na analizo grobišča (Knific, Bitenc) in stratigrafsko ter stavbno analizo (Štular). Analizi sta nastajali vzporedno in neodvisno druga od druge, a delitev nalog se je izkazala za neizvedljivo. Zaradi prepletanja virov smo vsi raziskovali vse. Končna izdelka smo nameravali združiti v homogeno celoto. Vendar se je kmalu pokazalo, da so podvajanja prej izjema kot pravilo, bogastvo različnih pristopov pa neizmerno. Zato sta oba dela predstavljena neokrnjena, uporabljata pa seveda enoten znanstveni aparat: katalog grobov, table predmetov, reprodukcije izvirne dokumentacije. Zaradi izjemno slabega stanja arhiva kostnega gradiva antropološke analize ni bilo mogoče enakovredno vključiti v proces interpretacije najdišča. Z namenom pripraviti celostno objavo vsega dostopnega gradiva antropološko gradivo predstavljamo v ločenem poglavju (Leben Seljak). V zaključku knjige predstavljamo izsledke izkopavanj pri Bodeščah (Modrijan). Predstavitvi arheoloških izsledkov o Blejskem otoku sledi širok pregled fenomena mitične pokrajine, njene izvedbe v blejskem kotu ter umesti Blejski otok v njen kontekst (Pleterski). Napovedni model potrdi njen obstoj z izkopavanji v Bodeščah. V kontekstu mitične pokrajine se pokaže Blejski otok kot sveto mesto, na kterem so potekali vsakoletni obredi. Tam je bil grob mitičnega lika, ki ga v Sloveniji poznamo kot kralja Matjaža.

What are the origins of the imagery and designs on common jewelry and portable artwork between late antiquity and the Middle Ages? These dynamic centuries encompass the transformation of the Greco-Roman world into the nascent kingdoms and medieval states upon which most modern European nations are based. The choices of jewelry and other forms of personal expression among the lower classes in ancient times is notoriously difficult to contextualize for a number of reasons. Little is known about the Christianization of east-central and eastern Europe, due to the fragmentary nature of the historical record. Yet occasionally, unexpected archaeological discoveries can offer fresh angles and new insights. This volume presents such an example: the discovery of a Byzantine-like church in Alba Iulia, Transylvania, dating from the 10th century - a unique find in terms of both age and function. This book explores social transformations which led to the establishment of medieval Hum (future Herzegovina) and Bosnia in the period from ca. 450 to 1200 AD using the available written and material sources. It follows social and political developments in these historical regions from the last centuries of Late Antiquity, through the social collapse of the seventh and eighth centuries, and into their new medieval beginnings in the ninth century. Fragmentary and problematic sources from this period were, in the past, often used to justify modern political claims to these contested territories and incorporate them into the ‘national biographies’ of the Croats, Serbs and Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims), or to support the ‘Yugoslavizing’ and other ideological discourses. The book goes beyond ideological and national mythologemes of the past in order to provide a new historical narrative that brings more light to this region placed on the frontiers of both the medieval West and the Byzantine empire.
