Book Description
Volume 1 of Samuel Bamford's autobiography. Samuel Bamford (28 February 1788 - 13 April 1872, was an English radical and writer, who was born in Middleton, Lancashire. In August 1819, Bamford led a group from Middleton to St Peter's Fields, to attend a meeting pressing for parliamentary reform, where they witnessed the Peterloo Massacre. Bamford was arrested and charged with treason. Although the evidence showed that he had not been involved in the violence, he was nevertheless found guilty of inciting a riot and sentenced to a year in Lincoln gaol. The experience of the massacre made a deep impression on Bamford, and convinced him that the state's power would always succeed against radical militancy. He came to be seen as a voice for radical reform, but opposed to any activism that involved physical force. Bamford was the author of poetry (mostly in standard English)but of those in dialect several showing sympathy with the conditions of the working class became widely popular.

Book Description
This wide-ranging volume brings together a blend of experienced and emerging scholars to examine the texture of everyday life for different parts of the wartime French population. It explores systems of coping, means of helping one another, confrontations with people or events and the challenges posed to and by Vichy's National Revolution during this difficult period in French and European history. The book focuses on human interactions at the micro level, highlighting lived experience within the complex social networks of this era, as French civilians negotiated the violence of war, the restrictions of Occupation, the shortages of daily necessities and the fear of persecution in their everyday lives. Using approaches drawn mostly from history, but also including oral history, film, gender studies and sociology, the text peers into the lives of ordinary men, women and children and opens new perspectives on questions of resistance, collaboration, war and memory; it tells some of the stories of the anonymous millions who suffered, coped, laughed, played and worked, either together at home or far apart in towns and villages across Occupied and Vichy France. Vichy France and Everyday Life is a crucial study for anyone interested in the social history of the Second World War or the history of France during the twentieth century.

Book Description
The action in this novel takes place in East Anglia and India with a brief sojourn in South Africa. Sir David Fairfax heads some of the UK's most successful and profitable businesses. He is a Member of Parliament, a newly appointed Cabinet Minister and a happily married family man. But there is a dark side to Sir David. Privately he is a crooked, black marketeer, people trafficker and a sadistic tyrant who terrifies staff and managing directors alike. Did he really kill his first two wives in order to acquire their businesses before marrying his childhood sweetheart? Sir David has many dark secrets and one shocking secret he thought was safely buried in the past. But someone has discovered that secret and embarked on a revenge killing spree involving the gruesome and ritualistic murders of his family. What is the significance of vintage clothing and underwear found at the scene of the murders? What lies behind the family's bizarre Christmas presents? Are they echoes of the past, pointers to the future and the terrible fate awaiting the family, or both? In a highly original narrative spanning three continents, Detective Chief Inspector Ben Westwood of Essex Police and disgraced former detective James Palmer, race against time to solve the murders and try to prevent the inevitable – the death of Sir David himself. A worthy successor to the author's collection of short stories entitled 'Tales of the Completely Unexpected'.
