Book Description
In Dye Lasers: 25 years, the pioneers and leading experts in the field of dye lasers present the current status and bright future perspectives of dye lasers and their applications in physics and chemistry. Particular topics covered include: new sources of ultrashort pulses, novel aspects of resonator design and imaging for femtosecond lasers, amplification schemes to terawatt intensity regimes, optics and high-resolution spectroscopy of atoms and molecules, and electro-optic and plasma physics applications of ultrashort and ultra-intense laser pulses. Since its invention in 1966, the dye laser has revolutionized many fields of science and technology. Questions of fundamental interest in physics and chemistry can now be answered: it is possible to test fundamental quantum physics in single-atom experiments and regioselective photochemistry in complexes can be monitored directlyusing dye-laser diagnostic methods. In this book the latest results (and most recent references) are presented for new sources of ultrashort pulses from the visible to the VUV, together with experimental details of ultrahigh-resolution spectroscopy of atoms and molecules, laser diagnostics of the dynamics of elementary chemical reactions, and ultrahigh intensity sources for laser target interaction.

Book Description
Excellent bridge between general solid-state physics textbook and research articles packed with providing detailed explanations of the electronic, vibrational, transport, and optical properties of semiconductors "The most striking feature of the book is its modern outlook ... provides a wonderful foundation. The most wonderful feature is its efficient style of exposition ... an excellent book." Physics Today "Presents the theoretical derivations carefully and in detail and gives thorough discussions of the experimental results it presents. This makes it an excellent textbook both for learners and for more experienced researchers wishing to check facts. I have enjoyed reading it and strongly recommend it as a text for anyone working with semiconductors ... I know of no better text ... I am sure most semiconductor physicists will find this book useful and I recommend it to them." Contemporary Physics Offers much new material: an extensive appendix about the important and by now well-established, deep center known as the DX center, additional problems and the solutions to over fifty of the problems at the end of the various chapters.

Book Description
Rather different problems can be lumped together under the general term 'laser control of atoms and molecules'. They include the laser selection of atomic and molecular velocities for the purpose of Doppler-free spectroscopy, laser control of the position and velocity of atoms (i.e. laser trapping and cooling of atoms), and laser control of atomic and molecular processes (ionization, dissociation) with a view of detecting single atoms and molecules and particularly separating isotopes and nuclear isomers. Over the last decades the principal problems posed have been successfully solved, and many of them have evolved remarkably in the subsequent investigations of the international research community. For example, the solution of the problem of laser cooling and trapping of atoms has given birth to the new field of the physics of ultracold matter, i.e. quantum atomic and molecular gases. The laser non-coherent control of uni-molecular processes has found an interesting extension in the field of laser coherent control of molecules. The concept of laser control of position has been successfully demonstrated with microparticles (optical tweezers), concurrently with investigations into atomic control. The laser photo-ionization of molecules on surfaces has led to the development of novel techniques of laser-assisted mass spectrometry of macromolecules, and so on. The aim of this book is to review these topics from a unified or 'coherent' point of view. It will be useful for many readers in various fields of laser science and its applications.

Book Description
We study the potential of the silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) platform for integrated optics. The unique properties of selected organic materials are added to silicon devices made with CMOS-based processes. We investigate the feasibility of this approach by making prototypes of key components in form of photonic integrated circuits: SOH lasers and SOH modulators are designed, fabricated, post-processed, and characterized. Application scenarios are identified.

Book Description
X-Ray Lasers 1992 contains a total of 92 papers from many of the world's leading researchers in the rapidly developing field of x-ray lasers. The book accurately reflects trends in x-ray laser research, particularly in pump mechanisms other than collisional pumping. It also focuses on the realization of new ideas for generating inversions at x-ray transitions.

Book Description
Bridging the gap between a general solid-state physics textbook and research articles, the renowned authors provide detailed explanations of the electronic, vibrational, transport, and optical properties of semiconductors. Their approach is a physical and intuitive one, rather than formal and pedantic. This textbook has been written with both students and researchers in mind, and the authors therefore present theories to explain experimental results. Throughout, the emphasis is on understanding the physical properties of Si, and similar tetrahedrally coordinated semiconductors, with explanations based on physical insights. Each chapter is enriched by an extensive collection of tables of material parameters, figures and problems -- many of the latter 'lead students by the hand' to arrive at the results.

Book Description
In the last few years it was seen the emergence of various new quantum phenomena specifically related with electronic or optical confinement on a sub-wavelength-size. Fast developments simultaneously occurred in the field of Atomic Physics, notably through various regimes of Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics, and in Solid State Physics, with advances in Quantum Well technology and Nanooptoelectronics. Simultaneously, breakthroughs in Near-Field Optics provided new tools which should be widely applicable to these domains. However, the key concepts used to describe these new and partly related effects are often very different and specific of the Community involved in a given development. It has been the ambition of the Meeting held at "Centre de Physique des Houches" to give an opportunity to specialists of different Communities to deepen their understanding of advances more or less intimately related to their own field, while presenting the basic concepts of these different fields through pedagogical Introductions. The audience comprised advanced students, postdocs and senior scientists, with a balanced participation of Atomic Physicists and Solid State Physicists, and had a truly international character. The considerable efforts of the lecturers, in order to present exciting new results in a language accessible to the whole audience, were the essential ingredients to achieve successfully what was the main goal of this School.

Book Description
Laser has been used in dermatology for over four decades. The concept of selective photothermolysis has transformed our understanding of laser tissue interactions, and there has been an explosive interest in laser treatment for both skin diseases and aesthetic indications over the past decade or more. Asian skin differs from Caucasian skin because of the higher amount of epidermal melanosomes and the higher level of melanin production. Laser- and light-based procedures in darker skin types have a significantly higher risk of complications, including scarring and pigmentary changes as compared with lighter skin types. This book has been highly anticipated as there are not many titles addressing these issues in Asian skin. It includes effective treatment paradigms as well as advice on complications and how to treat them. The book reflects the tremendous progress in the field of laser dermatology. The contributors to this textbook are clinicians with extensive experience in treating Asian skin. The book offers a comprehensive guide to treatment of Asian skin and will be of great value to dermatologists, plastic surgeons, pediatricians and general practitioners, who will benefit from the clinical wisdom that has been distilled from the extensive experience of the editors and contributors.
