Book Description
The Mathematics of Errors presents an original, rigorous and systematic approach to the calculus of errors, targeted at both the engineer and the mathematician. Starting from Gauss's original point of view, the book begins as an introduction suitable for graduate students, leading to recent developments in stochastic analysis and Malliavin calculus, including contributions by the author. Later chapters, aimed at a more mature audience, require some familiarity with stochastic calculus and Dirichlet forms. Sensitivity analysis, in particular, plays an important role in the book. Detailed applications in a range of fields, such as engineering, robotics, statistics, financial mathematics, climate science, or quantum mechanics are discussed through concrete examples. Throughout the book, error analysis is presented in a progressive manner, motivated by examples and appealing to the reader’s intuition. By formalizing the intuitive concept of error and richly illustrating its scope for application, this book provides readers with a blueprint to apply advanced mathematics in practical settings. As such, it will be of immediate interest to engineers and scientists, whilst providing mathematicians with an original presentation. Nicolas Bouleau has directed the mathematics center of the Ecole des Ponts ParisTech for more than ten years. He is known for his theory of error propagation in complex models. After a degree in engineering and architecture, he decided to pursue a career in mathematics under the influence of Laurent Schwartz. He has also written on the production of knowledge, sustainable economics and mathematical models in finance. Nicolas Bouleau is a recipient of the Prix Montyon from the French Academy of Sciences.

Book Description
Biomedical imaging is a fascinating research area to applied mathematicians. Challenging imaging problems arise and they often trigger the investigation of fundamental problems in various branches of mathematics. This is the first book to highlight the most recent mathematical developments in emerging biomedical imaging techniques. The main focus is on emerging multi-physics and multi-scales imaging approaches. For such promising techniques, it provides the basic mathematical concepts and tools for image reconstruction. Further improvements in these exciting imaging techniques require continued research in the mathematical sciences, a field that has contributed greatly to biomedical imaging and will continue to do so. The volume is suitable for a graduate-level course in applied mathematics and helps prepare the reader for a deeper understanding of research areas in biomedical imaging.

Book Description
To formalize the dynamics of living things is to search for invariants in a system that contains an irreducible aspect of “fuzziness”, because biological processes are characterized by their large statistical variability, and strong dependence on temporal and environmental factors. What is essential is the identification of what remains stable in a “living being” that is highly fluctuating. The use of mathematics is not limited to the use of calculating tools to simulate and predict results. It also allows us to adopt a way of thinking that is founded on concepts and hypotheses, leading to their discussion and validation. Instruments of mathematical intelligibility and coherence have gradually “fashioned” the view we now have of biological systems. Teaching and research, fundamental or applied, are now dependent on this new order known as Integrative Biology or Systems Biology.
