Sir Callie and the Dragon's Roost
Author: Esme Symes-Smith
Publisher: Yearling
ISBN: 059348584X
Category : Juvenile Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 433
Book Description
The battle is won, but the war is far from over. In this thrilling sequel, a twelve-year-old nonbinary hopeful knight fights for the heart of their kingdom in a magical medieval world filled with dragons, shape-shifters, and witches. Thanks to Callie and their friends, Helston seems to be changing for the better: Boys are allowed to explore their magic, and girls are permitted to train as warriors. Callie is an official Helston page, Willow in on track to become king, and Elowen and Edwyn are finally safe and free of their father. Everything is…perfect. Except it isn’t. Not in Helston, where every step forward is accompanied by a storm of opposition. Even Queen Ewella and Sir Nick are struggling against the wave of fear and anti-magical sentiment growing daily, while the encroaching threat from across the bridge looms. Callie isn’t foolish; they notice the suspicious glances thrown Neal’s way and hear the doubtful murmurs following Willow. They know what people think about them, too. Tolerance is not the same as acceptance, and when the fragile peace finally shatters, Callie and their friends have no choice but to leave their home and run. On the other side of the bridge, old secrets are revealed and new allegiances are formed that will throw into question everything Callie thought they knew about their world. Including what it means to be a hero.

In Community With Readers
Author: Lynsey Burkins
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1003841872
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 284
Book Description
“Whole-class reading instruction has the power to harness the collective knowledge of the reading community that will foster independent readers and thinkers as they move through their literate lives.” What is the true purpose of whole-group reading instruction? Is it possible to teach standards and skills while also creating a community in which students are free to bring their whole selves into the work of reading? And how do we make this vision an everyday reality in our grades 3-6 classrooms? Elementary educators Lynsey Burkins and Franki Sibberson answer these questions and more in In Community With Readers: Transforming Reading Instruction with Read-Alouds and Minilessons. Burkins and Sibberson invite us into their classrooms as they redesign read-alouds and minilessons to support readers in whole-group reading instruction. Inside this book you’ll find: ● Ideas for co-creating a community aligned to standards and grounded in readers’ identity, independence, and agency ● A day-by-day look into what read-alouds and minilessons look like across a reading unit ● Practical and meaningful routines for helping students co-construct an understanding of the standards, the books they read, and one another’s ideas ● Planning and note-taking templates designed to center both the standards we teach and the ideas our students bring to these standards ● An illustrated step-by-step guide to the first eight weeks of whole-group reading instruction In this book, Burkins and Sibberson push back on the idea that whole-group reading instruction must be teacher-centered skill and drill, and instead offer us a way to create a truly meaningful whole-group reading community.

The Dragon in the West
Author: Daniel Ogden
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0192565877
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 446
Book Description
An exploration of how the image and idea of the dragon has evolved through history How did the dragon get its wings? Everyone in the modern West has a clear idea of what a dragon looks like and of the sorts of stories it inhabits, not least devotees of the fantasies of J. R. R. Tolkien, J. K. Rowling, and George R. R. Martin. A cross between a snake and some fearsome mammal, often sporting colossal wings, they live in caves, lie on treasure, maraud, and breathe fire. They are extraordinarily powerful, but even so, ultimately defeated in their battles with humans. What is the origin of this creature? The Dragon in the West is the first serious and substantial account in any language of the evolution of the modern dragon from its ancient forebears. Daniel Ogden's detailed exploration begins with the drakōn of Greek myth and the draco of the dragon-loving Romans, and a look at the ancient world's female dragons. It brings the story forwards though Christian writings, medieval illustrated manuscripts, and the lives of dragon-duelling saints, before concluding with a study of dragons found in the medieval Germanic world, including those of the Anglo-Saxon Beowulf and the Norse sagas.

Dragons in My Classroom
Author: Barbara Kennard
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 164742366X
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 142
Book Description
As a young book lover with dyslexia, Barbara found the solution to her reading struggles in Miss Gluding, her first grade teacher, who showed compassion for her student’s plight—and knew how to help her. From that time on, Barbara knew what she wanted to be: a teacher, just like Miss Gluding. Unfortunately, Barbara also had some bad teachers in the years that ensued—including her sixth grade teacher, an exacting woman who called attention to Barbara’s learning disabilities in front of classmates. Still wanting to follow in Miss Gluding’s footsteps in 1964, Barbara vowed she would be a better one than her sixth grade teacher; instead, however, she became very much like her, with unattainable expectations for her students and herself. After seventeen years in the teaching profession, she realized she had to either change her teaching style or change careers. By providence, right as she stood at this crossroads, she was offered the opportunity to teach overseas at The Dragon School in Oxford, England, for a year—an opportunity she jumped at. In the year that followed, Barbara would rely on her faith in God to give up a lot of what she knew about teaching and learn to do it differently—ways that wouldn’t have room for her perfectionism. In short, she would have to begin again.

Pages : 467
Book Description
When West leaves his bedroom window open, little did he know his scent was luring the most ancient of species. It was a scent that the reptile had searched for its whole life. Through this window came Ral, the tiny leader and oracle of the Dragons of Asgard. This was a dragon clan that had gone unnoticed on Earth for thousands of years, awaiting the one called Zod, who was predicted to rise up and fight for the Dragons of Asgard, freeing them from their enemies grasps forever. Ral reveals to West that his clan of dragons will soon die out, because the Golden One, a massive golden dragon that awoke from its thousand year sleep, has begun to hunt them down, devouring their flesh and quenching its thirst with their blood to gain the tiny dragons unique powers. Ral speaks of a ship that was sent, but never arrived, which was to rescue the tiny dragon clan. When West and Michelle hear about a UFO crash that many eyewitnesses had seen over the city of Needles, California, they quickly put two and two together. West and his two friends decide that the only way to save the tiny dragons is to get their ship back and send them home. Believing the UFO to have been taken to a secret military base nearby, West borrows his fathers classic 68 Corvette and they go on a road trip to Area S4, 13.5 miles southwest of Area 51. This sci-fi/fantasy novel is based on a true UFO crash that took place on May 14, 2008 in Needles, California and can be read in a supplement at the end of this book.
