Book Description
Excerpt from Documentary History of the Struggle for Religious Liberty in Virginia In the year 1886, while pastor of the Culpeper Baptist church, I was drawn into a lengthy controversy with the Hon. William Wirt Henry, which forced me to search for and examine for myself all available original sources of information concerning the struggle for religious liberty in Virginia. There had been manifested at various times and on various occasions a disposition to rewrite the history of that struggle, and to rob our Baptist fathers of the peculiar honor which has ever been claimed for them - that of being the foremost, most zealous, and most consistent and unwavering champions of soul liberty. And not a few of our own young brethren were beginning to question the soundness of that claim, and to count as " Baptist brag" much that was spoken on the platform and published in our newspapers during the "Memorial Campaign" of 1873. Hence, to satisfy my own mind, I determined to go hack of Howell's "Early Baptists of Virginia," to the sources from which he and others had drawn their information-to the Journal of the Virginia House of Burgesses, or General Assembly, and to the writings of those who participated in the struggle. Being convenient to the Congressional Library, in Washington, and our State Library, in Richmond, I seized every opportunity, during the remainder of my stay in Culpeper, to gather from all sources the evidence in this case. I copied everything of value which I could find, making note of book and page, and arranged the material for future use. The History of Religious Liberty
Author: Michael Farris
Publisher: New Leaf Publishing Group
ISBN: 1614584508
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 512
Book Description
Early American advocates of freedom did not believe in religious liberty in spite of their Christianity, but explicitly because of their individual faith in Christ, which had been molded and instructed by the Bible. The greatest evidence of their commitment to liberty can be found in their willingness to support the cause of freedom for those different from themselves. The assertion that the Enlightenment is responsible for the American Bill of Rights may be common, but it is devoid of any meaningful connection to the actual historical account. History reveals a different story, intricately gathered from the following: Influence of William Tyndale's translation work and the court intrigues of Henry VIII Spread of the Reformation through the eyes of Martin Luther, John Knox, and John Calvin The fight to establish a bill of rights that would guarantee every American citizen the free exercise of their religion. James Madison played a key role in the founding of America and in the establishment of religious liberty. But the true heroes of our story are the common people whom Tyndale inspired and Madison marshaled for political victory. These individuals read the Word of God for themselves and truly understood both the liberty of the soul and the liberty of the mind. The History of Religious Liberty is a sweeping literary work that passionately traces the epic history of religious liberty across three centuries, from the turbulent days of medieval Europe to colonial America and the birth pangs of a new nation.

Beyond Toleration
Author: Chris Beneke
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0199700001
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 318
Book Description
At its founding, the United States was one of the most religiously diverse places in the world. Baptists, Methodists, Catholics, Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Congregationalists, Quakers, Dutch Reformed, German Reformed, Lutherans, Huguenots, Dunkers, Jews, Moravians, and Mennonites populated the nations towns and villages. Dozens of new denominations would emerge over the succeeding years. What allowed people of so many different faiths to forge a nation together? In this richly told story of ideas, Chris Beneke demonstrates how the United States managed to overcome the religious violence and bigotry that characterized much of early modern Europe and America. The key, Beneke argues, did not lie solely in the protection of religious freedom. Instead, he reveals how American culture was transformed to accommodate the religious differences within it. The expansion of individual rights, the mixing of believers and churches in the same institutions, and the introduction of more civility into public life all played an instrumental role in creating the religious pluralism for which the United States has become renowned. These changes also established important precedents for future civil rights movements in which dignity, as much as equality, would be at stake. Beyond Toleration is the first book to offer a systematic explanation of how early Americans learned to live with differences in matters of the highest importance to them --and how they found a way to articulate these differences civilly. Today when religious conflicts once again pose a grave danger to democratic experiments across the globe, Beneke's book serves as a timely reminder of how one country moved past toleration and towards religious pluralism.
