En los últimos años se han producido grandes cambios en las expectativas de demanda, por parte de las familias, de sistemas automáticos. Las posibilidades de comunicarse, realizar las tareas cotidianas, gestionar los consumos de suministros o simplemente, divertirse en casa se han multiplicado, mejorando la calidad de vida de sus usuarios. Todos estos beneficios han sido posibles gracias a la introducción de la domótica en el hogar. Implantar un sistema inteligente de control en una vivienda constituye un importante valor añadido, ya que conceptos tales como seguridad, comunicación, ahorro energético y comodidad, pueden llegar a ser atractivos para el segmento de las familias. La resistencia por parte de las familias a la instalación de este tipo de sistemas se focaliza en tres aspectos: robustez del sistema, coste del mismo y complejidad de autogestión. El proyecto consiste en el diseño e implementación de una plataforma compuesta por una base de datos y una Web, externa a la vivienda, a través de la cual se accede al Web Server local. El Web Server local se comunica con las aplicaciones distribuidas a través un protocolo de radiofrecuencia (RF) diseñado específicamente para el proyecto. A modo de ejemplo, se integran soluciones de mercado con aplicaciones propias desarrolladas específicamente para el proyecto. Existen en el mercado soluciones estandarizadas que pueden ser integradas en viviendas unifamiliares. Sin embargo, el análisis del mercado concluye que el nivel de penetración en este segmento es muy bajo. Las razones son: falta de información, elevado coste, retorno de inversión incierto, obras de instalación, aplicaciones cautivas, dependencia intensiva de personal cualificado para su gestión. El proyecto no pretende competir con las soluciones estandarizadas, sino alcanzar un segmento de mercado de familias que deseen acceder a soluciones que puedan autogestionar a un coste razonable. El proyecto está enfocado a garantizar un retorno de la inversión atractivo, gracias a la mejor gestión de los recursos y a reducir las emisiones de CO2.

Environmental concerns regarding continuous use of synthetic dyes saw a revival in the demand for natural dyes as natural dyes exhibit better biodegradability and generally have a higher compatibility with the environment. However, one of the limitations on the use of natural dyes or pigments is the low extraction yield factors (a few grams of pigment per kg of dried raw material). Therefore, the exploitation of other biological sources such as fungi, bacteria and cell cultures offers interesting alternative. Microbial pigments such as from bacterial origins offer the advantage in terms of production compared to pigments extracted from vegetables or animals, due to its simple cell and fast culturing technique. This book offers interesting insight into initial works carried out to demonstrate the potential use of bacterial pigment as colorant for various applications.

In The Charisma Machine, Morgan Ames chronicles the life and legacy of the One Laptop per Child project and explains why—despite its failures—the same utopian visions that inspired OLPC still motivate other projects trying to use technology to “disrupt” education and development. Announced in 2005 by MIT Media Lab cofounder Nicholas Negroponte, One Laptop per Child promised to transform the lives of children across the Global South with a small, sturdy, and cheap laptop computer, powered by a hand crank. In reality, the project fell short in many ways—starting with the hand crank, which never materialized. Yet the project remained charismatic to many who were captivated by its claims of access to educational opportunities previously out of reach. Behind its promises, OLPC, like many technology projects that make similarly grand claims, had a fundamentally flawed vision of who the computer was made for and what role technology should play in learning. Drawing on fifty years of history and a seven-month study of a model OLPC project in Paraguay, Ames reveals that the laptops were not only frustrating to use, easy to break, and hard to repair, they were designed for “technically precocious boys”—idealized younger versions of the developers themselves—rather than the children who were actually using them. In Networking Peripheries, Anita Chan shows how digital cultures flourish beyond Silicon Valley and other celebrated centers of technological innovation and entrepreneurship. The evolving digital cultures in the Global South vividly demonstrate that there are more ways than one to imagine what digital practice and global connection could look like. To explore these alternative developments, Chan investigates the diverse initiatives being undertaken to “network” the nation in contemporary Peru, from attempts to promote the intellectual property of indigenous artisans to the national distribution of digital education technologies to open technology activism in rural and urban zones. Drawing on ethnographic accounts from government planners, regional free-software advocates, traditional artisans, rural educators, and others, Chan demonstrates how such developments unsettle dominant conceptions of information classes and innovations zones. Builders of the Vision traces the intellectual history and contemporary practices of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Numerical Control since the years following World War II until today. Drawing from primary archival and ethnographic sources, it identifies and documents the crucial ideas shaping digital design technologies since the first numerical control and CAD systems were developed under US Air Force research contracts at MIT between 1949 and 1970: the cybernetic theorization of design as a human-machine endeavor; the vision of computers as "perfect slaves" taking care of the drudgery of physical labor; the techno-social utopias of computers as vehicles of democracy and social change; the entrepreneurial urge towards design and construction integration; and the managerial ideologies enabling today’s transnational geographies of practice. City planning is a concept which usually covers the wide range of events, processes and developments taking place in our cities, but individual plans and designs cannot do justice to the complex realities of the city. In "Induction Cities" the author aims to take the reader beyond our traditional understanding of city design to redefine our perception of design in this context. With the assistance of computers, a dynamic mechanism will be created which generates a result corresponding to the specific conditions and requirements stipulated. By this form of "meta-design" a greater degree of freedom is obtained than the conventional design methods provide. In this publication, this new theory and process is analysed, looking at the first computer-generated architecture in the world, the underground station "Iidabashi"in Tokyo. Makoto Sei Watanabe studied architecture and worked in the office of Arata Isozaki in Tokyo. In 1984 he founded his own architectural office which has realised numerous projects.
