The whole subject of diseases of bones and joints is undergoing a rapid development, and is being transferred from the realm of empiricism to that of scientific study. While we must avoid going too fast, and taking up every idea without sufficient supporting evidence, we must not lag behind with those who complacently regard almost all arthropathies and osteopathies as manifestations of "rheumatism," and treat them in a manner that may be named most charitably as routine. The work represents an effort to present the subject as briefly as possible, dealing with the various diseases, in the matter of space, very much as their relative frequency. It is intended primarily for the general practitioner, but, contrary to custom, instead of furnishing that long suffering and very important person with a mass of detail, and with many methods of treatment from which he may choose, attempts to lay down broad general principles, with the evidence on which they are based, and then to show how these principles may be applied. Excerpt from Tuberculosis of Bones and Joints Tuberculosis of bones and joints is such a common affection that a large percentage of the clinical material of the surgeon and the general practitioner is made up of such cases. The tubercular nature of most of the chronic affections of bones and joints is not as freely accepted and as fully realized as it should be by the mass of the profession, and consequently a correct diagnosis is often not made before the disease has become incurable. The successful treatment of these affections depends largely on an early, correct diagnosis and the adoption of a timely, rational, local, and general treatment in consonance with the true nature of the disease. The object of the author in writing this book has been to collect from recent literature the modern ideas on tubercular disease of bones and joints and present them to the reader in a condensed form, mingled, in appropriate places, with the results of his own experience. Old authorities are occasionally quoted for the purpose of showing the contrast between the old and recent views regarding the etiology and nature of this form of bone and joint disease. My thanks are due to Dr. Stehman for correcting the galley-proofs, and to Mr. Rettig for a number of original drawings. Soon after 1861, whether the appearance of my First Edition was the stimulus, or merely fortuitously I know not, many excel lent essays were published, and much careful investigation was undertaken here, in America, in Germany, and in France; moreover, personal experience and research had provided me with a quantity of material.
