Book Description
Saint Anthony of Padua made his mark as a popular, powerful preacher in Western Europe in the early decades of the thirteenth century, and he has developed a worldwide reputation as the finder of lost things. Regardless of creed, people invoke him on a range of issues, but especially Catholics do, who cultivate the belief that saints can intercede on our behalf. The author, though feeling unworthy, shares some recent experiences of awakening spirituality which ignited the desire to learn about this saint and his marvelous gifts in God's service. As a retired lecturer, she has written a book with something for everyone: academic research on the medieval saint and the Franciscan Order he joined; the challenge of deepening faith through an attitude of openness in prayer as revealed in engaging stories collected from the CGS Catholic community in Pittsburgh; the stories are interactive in that readers can find some lost items in the "Lost and Found" Pictorial Index; and the pride of the parishes is exhibited in Christmas nativity scenes, including the pictures of some of our youngest members. It is hoped that this book will foster faith, hope and love in these uncertain times. Doretta Whalen is a retired adjunct professor: at University of Pittsburgh teaching Jazz Voice and inheriting the "popular" History of Jazz, named Editor's Pick Best Class by The Pitt News in 2013; at Penn State Greater Allegheny founding the vocal ensemble PSGA (Penn State Greater A Cappella) Melody Lions. As host of APR show on WYEP 91.3 FM Pittsburgh, "Cruise Control for a Sunday," she interviewed guests and created "Classic Jazz Revue" voice-over. Her dissertation examined Holiday's Catholic school experience, suggesting exposure to chant helped shape her singing style. Doretta serves the church as cantor and volunteer.

Charles Warren Stoddard St. Anthony of Padua - lector, orator, contemplative, wonder-worker - is considered to be the most popular Saint in the Catholic Church. He was of French descent, from Portugal, but worked in Italy as a Franciscan priest. Renowned for his incredible miracles - including preaching to the fish when people would not listen to him - he is most famous as "The Patron Saint of Lost Objects," but he bears many other great titles, e.g., Doctor of the Church, Hammer of Heretics, Storehouse of Sacred Scripture, Father of Mystic Theology, Ark of Both Testaments, Champion of the Sacred Heart, Apostle of Mary's Assumption, Protector of Seafarers and Patron of a Bountiful Harvest. St. Bonaventure said of him that "He possessed the science of the Angels, the faith of the Patriarchs, the foreknowledge of the Prophets, the zeal of the Apostles, the purity of virgins, the austerities of confessors, and the heroism of martyrs." In all, one will search hard in the annals of the Saints to find a more fascinating and inspiring life than that of St. Anthony of Padua.

Book Description
First published in the 4th century A.D., Anthony the Great's biography was authored by Christian Saint Athanasius of Alexandria. Since its original release, the book has helped spread the beliefs, practices and arduous faith of Anthony the Great to a wider audience. A significant progenitor of the monastic tradition, Saint Anthony lived an ascetic lifestyle in the deserts of Egypt. Although not the earliest of religious figures committed to this tradition, through his actions and preaching Anthony helped popularise and spread principles that would contribute heavily to the establishment of Christian monastic orders in Europe and beyond. One famous event in St. Anthony's life was his encounter with the supernatural in the remote reaches of the Egyptian desert. This occurrence, wherein the otherworldly presence tried to tempt him away from his spartan philosophy of living, has experienced much coverage in Western art and literature. The translation to English contained in this edition is by Philip Schaff and Henry Wace; theologians who held Anthony the Great in high esteem.

Book Description
Saint Anthony of Padua lived a remarkable life. Traversing four countries of the medieval world, he preached amidst heretical beliefs and scandals of the age. Privileged, well-educated, he chose Franciscan poverty for himself, living out Gospel values which endeared him to the people, establishing him as a model of virtuous living for his time...and perhaps for all time. Travel with the author to Europe which still bears Anthony's footprints. Many photographs document her trail; maps illustrate his journeys. Historical information, including Saint Anthony's own writing, reveals aspects of his personal life and deep abiding faith. Contemporary voices of the faithful and intercultural dialogue spark history, to enrich your understanding of one of the world's most popular religious figures. The last part features all new, insightful Saint Anthony stories and chronicles the roll-out of the author's first book during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Doretta Whalen introduces her second book in honor of this beloved saint. Following Saint Anthony's example of putting faith into action, Whalen donates all receipts from book sales and contributions to her parish, hoping to facilitate a stronger community for liturgical worship, ministry, and outreach. A retired adjunct professor of music, Dr. Whalen resides in Pittsburgh, Pa. where she teaches voice, serves as a cantor and volunteer at the Parish of Saint Raphael the Archangel, and takes part in home Bible study. Her pastimes are swimming, earthing, tap dance, flower gardening, and Duolingo Spanish.
