Book Description
Excerpt from Discourses on the Jewish Religion, Vol. 1 The several sketches of character introduced, although I confess that many of them have been taken from actual observation and historical personages, will nevertheless, I hope, be found not to contain any thing offensive to any one; for though I would always condemn crime and impiety in language of becoming severity: I should be sorry to be deemed guilty of personalities, and of dragging the faults of the living or dead before the public gaze without a suffi cient and cogent reason. Book Description
Excerpt from Discourses on the Jewish Religion, Vol. 2 O thou, who appointest to each man a destiny of good or evil as his ways may deserve, and who art ever ready to annul the evil decree, when the sinner returneth unto Thee with prayer and sincerity, re ceive now, at this season of forgiveness of sin, the supplications which we, thy people Israel, address to Thee In the countries of our captivity; and may our prayer be as acceptable before Thee, as was the sac rifice without blemish which was formerly brought to thy temple as an atonement for the transgressions of thy congregation. O save us from evil! 0 protect us from the contumely of the ungodly and the perse cutions of the strangers to thy holy creed; and let thy grace be displayed over us, so that all inhabitants of the earth may see, that in truth we are called by thy name. May this be thy will. Amen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Discourses on the Jewish Religion, Vol. 6: Third Series How holy art Thou, O God! How pure is thy being! How immaculate thy perfection The heavens declare thy exalted glory, and the-earth responds to the theme; and wherever we are, whithersoever we move, we are met by the evidence Of thy presence, by the almost tangible manifestation Of the proof that we are before Thee. In our sorrows therefore we are consoled with the assurance that Thou art near to listen to our sighs, to behold our every suffering; and when the world allures us unto sin, the consciousness that thy eye is upon us will withhold us from transgressing thy precepts. O I that we may thus feel Thee forever, know Thee in our hearts at all times, have Thee pres ent before our eyes continually, that we may follow thy light and humbly walk where thy glory leads. For thus would we be perfect Israelites, servants after. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Discourses on the Jewish Religion, Vol. 7 That is to say, neither ourselves nor any other human beings - can be the authors of our happiness, and that, in consequence, we are necessarily dependent upon a higher Power for whatever we enjoy. So, then, the first inquiry which any thinking mind is led to make will bring him to the acknowledgment of a Being who is his superior; and as this Being needs must be powerful, because of the display of his superiority, man in his helplessness is induced to ask Him for aid on any occasion where he finds that his own strength does not suffice to obtain what he needs, - or, in other words, the worship of a superior Power is natural to man. But this does not say that his ideas must necessarily be based upon what we call a correct standard, or that he will assimilate with us in the acknowledgment of a uniform, all-pervading Being, who created, sustains, and governs all from 'the beginning of things unto the present moment; for this is a depth of discovery at which man can scarcely arrive by his own reflection. Book Description
Excerpt from Discourses on the Jewish Religion, Vol. 9 Although we are not assembled this day in a house consecrated to God, still we have met for the purpose of doing honour to our Everlasting King, and to la bour in his name. It has always been the custom of Israel, on all occasions of public assembly, not to let the words of prayer be wanting; it is 3pi Lflp The voice which is the voice of Jacob, which is ever acceptable on High; in this is our strength, in this our victory; herein angels of mercy join us to do honour to the Creator; and of this, in our deepest affliction, tyrants in all their power, nations in all their tumultuous wrath, could not rob us. Let us, then, not be unmindful of this our potent weapon. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Discourses, Argumentative and Devotional, on the Subject of the Jewish Religion, Vol. 1 of 2: Delivered at the Synagogue Mikveh Israel, in Philadelphia, in the Years 5590-5597 IN the following work the reader is presented with the labour of more than six years. Many of the Discourses were composed, when suffering both under mental and bodily afflictions, when any exertion was extremely painful; and it must not be imagined, that, what appears to read smoothly, and as if written off-hand, costs not an intense degree of thought and application. Very often the labour was interrupted by severe sickness and other nu toward events, and hence the frequent long intervals between the different treatises. Still I never relaxed in my endeavours to diffuse religious and useful knowledge, and I fervently trust that I have succeeded, to a certain extent, to impart some information which is not readily accessible in books in general circulation.
