The Advantage of Disadvantage

ISBN: 9781009070171
Category : POLITICAL SCIENCE
Languages : en

Book Description
"The verdict was delivered around 3:15 p.m. on April 29, 1992. People were enraged. Despite video showing Sergeant Stacey Koon and Officers Laurence Powell, Timothy Wind, and Theodore Briseno beating an unarmed African American motorist, a mostly White jury failed to convict the officers of the assault and excessive use of force against Rodney King. Within minutes, large crowds mobilized in and around the city of Los Angeles. For the next several days, the Los Angeles metropolitan area was teeming with assaults, looting, arson, and even murder. President H. W. Bush addressed the nation two days after the protests began.1 He focused on the "incidents of random terror and lawlessness." He argued that what was taking place was "not about civil rights. . .. It's not a message of protest. It's been the brutality of a mob, pure and simple." President Bush's focus on the property damage and violence was an effort to delegitimize the protesters' grievances. It was an attempt to justify the mobilization of thousands of law enforcement agents to Los Angeles. 2 He gave an extensive description of the law and order measures that were being deployed in response to the protests, and he only briefly discussed of how he planned to address the grievances that incited the protest. President Bush insisted that "[in] a civilized society, there can be no excuse - no excuse - for the murder, arson, theft, and vandalism that have terrorized the law-abiding citizens of Los Angeles""--

Overcoming Disadvantage in Education
Author: Stephen Gorard
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135009538
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 214
Book Description
Governments, local authorities, school leaders, and teachers all over the world want to improve the educational attainment and participation of all students, and to minimise any systematic differences in outcomes for social and economic groups. A particular concern is for those students from backgrounds that may objectively disadvantage them at school and beyond. However, considerable effort and money is currently being wasted on policies, practices and interventions that have very little hope of success, and that may indeed endanger the progress that is being made otherwise. The poor quality of much education research evidence, coupled with an unwillingness among users of evidence to discriminate appropriately between what we know and do not know, means that opportunities are being missed. At a time of reduced public spending it is important that proposed interventions are both effective and efficient. Overcoming Disadvantage in Education is unique in the way that it: Shows where the solutions to underachievement and poverty lie combines primary(new), secondary (official) and published (review) evidence distinguishes between those possible causes of underachievement that are largely fixed for individuals, and those that are modifiable. There are evidence-informed ways forward in handling under-achievement and increasing social justice in education. This book shows which the more likely approaches are, and where further work could yield further benefits. This book will be a key text for students, developing academic researchers and supervisors in the social sciences, and for those research users charged with improving educational outcomes.

Coming to Terms with Chance
Author: Oscar H. Gandy
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317164083
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 248
Book Description
The application of probability and statistics to an ever-widening number of life-decisions serves to reproduce, reinforce, and widen disparities in the quality of life that different groups of people can enjoy. As a critical technology assessment, the ways in which bad luck early in life increase the probability that hardship and loss will accumulate across the life course are illustrated. Analysis shows the ways in which individual decisions, informed by statistical models, shape the opportunities people face in both market and non-market environments. Ultimately, this book challenges the actuarial logic and instrumental rationalism that drives public policy and emphasizes the role that the mass media play in justifying its expanded use. Although its arguments and examples take as their primary emphasis the ways in which these decision systems affect the life chances of African-Americans, the findings are also applicable to a broad range of groups burdened by discrimination.

Disadvantage
Author: Jo Lampert
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1350259128
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 121
Book Description
Recognition of disadvantage is seen as crucial in preparing socially just teachers who can recognize and address inequities, and this engaging guide provides innovative strategies to reflect on disadvantage. Coupled with its discursive partners, inclusion and diversity, trainee teachers are asked to engage with theories of disadvantage, and advised to recognize, support and lead change for students who historically experience high levels of exclusion and marginalization. But what does disadvantaged mean? In this book, the authors draw together international perspectives to explore the subtle and complex differences produced by the keyword disadvantage in different geo-political contexts, and look at the political, historical, social, and cultural significance of the word. They showcase narratives from the subjects of disadvantage, including indigenous perspectives. They include standpoints from immigrants, asylum seekers and refugees and consider the intersectional nature of disadvantage, for instance, the experiences of LGBTQI+ groups who are living in poverty.
