The Nautical Negro
Author: Brian James
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1463418523
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 367
Book Description
This book is the story of an African American mans strange Love, and passion for anything nautically related. Book I of the Nautical Negro was written 10 years ago during My first stay in the New York State Prison system.. When I took to writing Book one I had never written anything before that time and was learning on the fly. So the stories in book one reflect my limited experience in the craft of writing . Book one does however give a very clear picture of my nautical development and the progression Ive made throughout the years. Book II of The Nautical Negro was written during my last term of incarceration in 2009. Book II is a lot more comprehensive than book I , and the development of the writing of Book II mirrors in a lot of ways my evolution and development in the surf game. As you will read they have both come a long way. Book II also delves pretty deeply into my spiritual development and the path I believe that has been laid for me on this nautical journey Ive undertaken. One message I do hope this book conveys is that no matter where you come from, no matter what your circumstances were coming up, never give up your dreams. You can make it happen in reality. The last and most important impression I hope to leave on the readers is never let anyone talk you out of your dreams , or tell you , you cant do something. My father all ways said theres no such word as cant! And thats how I always lived my life. That message is especially important to get out in the African American community , because all my life I heard people say I wasnt suppose to surf, or swim the way I did because I was black. And to me thats the worst thing you can do to a developing young mind. Young Brothers and Sisters need to be encouraged to expand there minds, and indeed there horizons by letting natural talents blossom. They must be allowed to purse what ever endeavor there young hearts and minds desire. Brian BJ James Author of The Nautical Negro!

I Only Roast the Ones I Love

Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1439164207
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 325
Book Description
Jeffrey Ross is one of the world’s most foremost practitioners of insult comedy. Having escaped from his family’s kosher catering business, he spent years in the comedy circuit and mastered his craft of delivering hilarious and often offensive insults. Mixing silliness and sincerity, Ross explains the overall history of the roast and explains the art of delivering a stream of “festive abuse” while eliciting laughs. Taking readers on an entertaining journey through his own career, he shares roasts straight from the Friar’s Club and the ever popular Comedy Central television events and provides a narrative of his favorite roasts of friends and family, including: Flava Flav: “You really are the ugliest man in America. I mean, how do you roast charcoal?” William Shatner: “Man, you have really let yourself boldly go. If Scotty tried to beam you up now you’ d break the f*n’ transporter.” Courtney Love: “Courtney Love, you’re like the girl next door…if you happen to live next to a Methadone clinic.” Featuring tips on timing, what’s going too far, and dealing with hecklers, Ross shows readers how to channel their inner roastmaster—and emphasizes the all-important Friars’ Club motto: We only roast the ones we love.

New Modes
Author: Chris Bryant
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119328144
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 136
Book Description
New modes of practice are now emerging in architecture. Rural Studio, Exyzt, Muf, Assemble and many more have led the way by challenging conventional ideas of ‘The Architect' and reclaiming the notion of architecture as something public that should work ultimately towards the collective good. This quiet revolution is born out of a crisis in the profession and a wider vacuum in the political, environmental and economic situation. On the one hand, architecture as a profession has seen its influence diminish rapidly over the last 50 years through privatisation and the dominance of finance, while on the other hand it has also lacked collective courage and readiness to evolve. Without necessarily being aware of each other, studios around the world are now redefining the profession of architecture as something more proactive, self-aware and political. They are broadening their skill sets and becoming deeply involved in their projects, initiating them themselves, financing them and running them. Though much of this work is dealing with local issues at a relatively small scale, it is inherently ambitious with global application. Contributors include: Shumi Bose, Indy Johar, Alison Killing, Douglas Murphy, and Finn Williams Featured architects: Aterlier d’Architecture Autogérée (AAA), adamo-faiden; Baupiloten, Grupo Toma, Hector, Inteligencias Colectivas, raumlaborberlin, studioBASAR, Studio GutGut, Taller Ken, and We Made That.

Dirty Secrets
Author: Richard Murphy
Publisher: Verso Books
ISBN: 1786631687
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 148
Book Description
The Panama Papers demonstrated that the superrich hide their wealth from the rest of us. Dirty Secrets shows that this was not by accident, but by design. It was the result of a powerful alliance of the wealthy, their advisers and the state that has undermined all attempts to solve the tax haven problem. This is because tax havens are the unacknowledged heart of globalized capitalism. Their purpose is to provide freedom from regulation. The exponents say this makes markets work and so we all gain. But this argument has now failed. Furthermore democracy itself is being threatened by the political fallout from the mistrust this regime has created. The result is that tax havens are now a threat to the very system that supposedly spawned it. Dirty Secrets is the most revelatory examination of the crisis by a leading expert, but also offers solutions on how governments can regulate havens and what the world might look like without them.
