Book Description
The work considers the analysis of antenna and arrays of thin wires of arbitrary orientation above imperfectly conducting ground planes. Emphasis is placed on the development of fast and accurate techniques for computation of the characteristics of antenna systems. An important problem is the evaluation of certain semi-infinite integrals encountered in the exact Sommerfeld solution. The time required for computation of these integrals is reduced by the application of interpolatory quadrature formulas. Where applicable, a modified method of steepest descent is used to evaluate the integrals. The approximate reflection coefficient method is derived from the Sommerfeld formulation via the method of steepest descent. The accuracy of the reflection coefficient method relative to the Sommerfeld method is discussed. Finally, formulas convenient for the optimization of various performance indices are discussed. Typical indices that have been optimized, both with and without constraints, are directivity, power gain, quality factor, and main beam radiation efficiency.

Book Description
Antennas in Inhomogeneous Media details the methods of analyzing antennas in such inhomogeneous media. The title covers the complex geometrical configurations along with its variational formulations. The coverage of the text includes various conditions the antennas are subjected to, such as antennas in the interface between two media; antennas in compressible isotropic plasma; and linear antennas in a magnetoionic medium. The selection also covers insulated loops in lossy media; slot antennas with a stratified dielectric or isotropic plasma layers; and cavity-backed slot antennas. The book will be of great use to electrical, communications, and radio engineers.

Book Description
The propagation of waves along and across the boundary between two media with different characteristic velocities is much more complicated when the source is on or near the boundary than when it is far away and the incident waves are plane. Examples of waves generated by localized sources near a boundary are the electromagnetic waves from the currents in a dipole on the surface of the earth and the seismic waves from a slip event in a fault in the earth's crust like the San Andreas fault in California. Both involve a type of surface wave that is called a lateral wave in electro magnetics and a head wave in seismology. Since the two are analogous and the latter is more easily visualized, it is conveniently used here to introduce and describe this important type of surface wave using the data of Y. Ben Zion and P. Malin ("San Andreas Fault Zone Head Waves Near Parkfield, CA," Science 251, 1592-1594, 29 March 1991).
