Sie ist dabei, das »unbequeme Denkmal« gegenwartskulturell zu transformieren zu einem innovativen Ort für zukunftsorientierten und gesellschaftsrelevanten Dialog und nachhaltig kreative Gestaltung. Die 2018 von der Marzona Stiftung erworbene Anlage wird derzeit nach einem Masterplan der dänischen Architektin Dorte Mandrup restauriert.

The culture of the "city without a future" in the American West between 1860 and 1900 has been maintained in the films out of which it arises. This architectural analysis does not attempt to nostalgically reactivate the Western town, but uses it instead as a vehicle to critique contemporary phenomena in terms of infrastructure, the link between architecture and city, and the role of urban planning - after the Stranger persuaded the residents of Lago to paint the whole town red, he declared himself ready to protect it from the approaching gunmen. The rise in biennials worldwide over the past three decades--and most notably in Asia--provokes a shift away from the traditional centers of contemporary art and signifies a new cultural phenomenon that changes the way we understand the relationship between artistic creation, institutions, localities, and social relations. Biennials provide a platform for presenting contemporary art from the world over to a traveling group of art professionals, but more importantly to a wide public. Initiated by the Biennial Foundation and hosted by the Gwangju Biennale Foundation in South Korea, the inaugural World Biennial Forum investigated this multiplicity of new centers and gravities along with the heterogeneous practices in large-scale art shows today. This publication collects the presentations and discussions developed during the forum. Keynotes by eminent intellectuals on democracy, aesthetic representation, and cosmopolitanism help us conceive of biennials as an alternative space of political imagination. Abbas Kiarostami (*1940 in Teheran) became known primarily for his films made in the seventies, which were awarded prizes at film festivals such as Cannes (Golden Palm 1997) and Venice. Despite large-scale solo exhibitions at institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the photographic oeuvre of this artist, who studied painting, has yet to be showcased in germanophone countries. Whereas Kiarostami's films contain haunting images of the human experience, he trains his photographic eye on untouched landscapes, often taking years to develop the images into series such as Snow White (1978-2004) and Rain and Wind (2007). This publication explores the correlation between photographic and filmic vision, between still and moving images.
