She tells stories about los antepasados, the forefathers and how they were cursed. She warns Tomas Alvarez that he has the curse upon him. He does not listen to her until his last breath, when he faces Tze-Otz. Tomas Alvarez is a proud and selfish man whose life and that of his family and those around him is severely impacted by his drinking.

Nestled on the banks of the Rio Grande, at the heart of a railroad, mining, and smelting empire, Smeltertown--La Esmelda, as its residents called it--was home to generations of ethnic Mexicans who labored at the American Smelting and Refining Company in El Paso, Texas. On the plains between the San Antonio River and the Rio Grande lies the heartland of what is perhaps the largest ethnic region in the United States, Tejano South Texas.
