Book Description
The objective of the program was to design and develop a compact airborne CO2 sensor unit capable of sensing and measuring the CO2 content of manned, sealed environments. A prototype carbon dioxide sensor was designed, built, and calibrated. The sensor operates by alternately comparing the infrared absorption of the air sample at 4.26 microns, where CO2 exhibits strong absorption and at 3.90 microns where it has little absorption. A two color rotating filter provides sampling 200 times per second. The unit weighs 10 pounds and has a power consumption of 70 watts. The instrument is capable of detecting a concentration of at least 0.30% CO2 and has full scale capability to 5%. (Author).

Book Description
The development is described of a laboratory model oxygen partial pressure sensor using a sputtered zinc oxide thin film. The film is operated at about 400 C through the use of a miniature silicon bar. Because of the unique resistance versus temperature relation of the silicon bar, control of the operational temperature is achieved by controlling the resistance. A circuit for accomplishing this is described. The response of sputtered zinc oxide films of various thicknesses to oxygen, nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide, and water vapor caused a change in the film resistance. Over a large range, film conductance varied approximately as the square root of the oxygen partial pressure. The presence of water vapor in the gas stream caused a shift in the film conductance at a given oxygen partial pressure. A theoretical model is presented to explain the characteristic features of the zinc oxide response to oxygen.

Book Description
The development of a small, accurate and reliable alarm sensor to monitor the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) in the hyperbaric gaseous environment of the saturation diver is required to prevent his exposure to dangerous levels of CO2. Andros Incorporated has developed a novel, nondispersive infrared (NDIR) 'density modulation' technique meeting all the previously mentioned requirements. Using the technique, the number of CO2 molecules in the radiation path is varied periodically by subjecting a sample of the gas to a known density modulation and then measuring the fractional change in transmitted infrared radiation. Response and design are discussed.

Book Description
The purpose of the program was to develop a novel carbon dioxide sensor based on obtaining changes in the electrical resistance of anion-exchange resin proportional to the ambient partial pressure of carbon dioxide. The change in resistance is due to the increased ionization of a weakly ionized base in the presence of a sightly acid gas. A laboratory program was conducted to evaluate the response of various types of weak-base ion-exchange polymers to carbon dioxide concentrations in the range of 0 to 4%. The optimum material consisted of a condensation polymer of resorcinol, formaldehyde and triethylenetetramine. A laboratory model of the CO2 Sensor was fabricated using these sensing elements in the form of small, thin strips. In order to minimize the effects of humidity and temperature, the model contained two sensing elements, one being a reference. A guard chamber was provided to absorb any strongly-acid gases. Electrical readout is made on a balancing potentiometer with an earphone detector. The Sensor is small (about 50 cubic inches), weighs less than 6 ounces, has a power requirement of less than 0.5 watts, and its operation is independent of gravity. (Author).
