This report describes a project to advance knowledge of boreal mixedwood management by testing techniques for achieving productive mixtures of conifers & hardwoods at operational scales. The project is applying treatments in aspen-dominated boreal mixedwood stands at two sites in north-east Ontario. Contrasting approaches are being compared (blended mixtures versus mosaics, partial cutting versus herbicide application, shade-tolerant versus shade-intolerant conifer regeneration) to help identify best practices. Treatment effectiveness is to be assessed by measuring regeneration growth, vegetation succession, soil nutrient dynamics, and changes in invertebrate populations. The primary objective of the study was to test a series of innovative silvicultural treatment packages designed to create mixtures of hardwoods and conifers while monitoring changes in ecological and silvicultural indicators of sustainability. The effects of wind damage on residual trees were monitored at the Stand Level Adaptive Management (SLAM) study site east of Cochrane, Ontario. The goals of this component of the study were to quantify and compare the effects of wind damage between partially harvested and unharvested portions of stands after harvest and to determine their influence on achieving the silvicultural objectives of the partial harvest treatment. Here the authors report the amount and distribution of wind damage in the residual stands at 1, 2, and 4 years after harvest and discuss the effects of this damage on the potential to achieve the desired silvicultural objectives. Specifically, they were interested in the effects of harvest treatments, tree species, direction of fall, stem rot, and stem form on the number and percent of wind damaged trees.--Document.

This report presents a five-year research strategy for MNR's Forest Research and Development Section's Forest Soil and Water Research Program (FSWRP). Included are the program's goals, research priorities, policy links, transfer plans, staffing needs, and partnerships. The FSWRP contributes to MNR's policy support using three major research themes: (1) riparian zone management, (2) silviculture and soils, and (3) climate change; all areas that the program has been addressing since 2002 and in which knowledge uncertainty is high. Planned 2006-2011 research efforts will continue to reduce uncertainties, specifically in relation to soil carbon and water cycling. Also, partnerships will be refined to address emerging issues such as peatland management (under the climate change theme) as well as parameterize and validate a series of process-based carbon, nutrient, and water models to improve understanding of how soil carbon and water interactions affect forest and aquatic productivity to develop a measurable indicator for sustainable forest management. This five-year strategy is based on a synthesis of the results of a workshop titled 'Integrating OMNR research priorities and climate change: soil and water resources' held February 15-16, 2005 in Sault Ste. Marie, as well as new policy directions introduced since that workshop.
