Book Description
The purpose of this investigation was to develop a reliable technique for determining body density in prepubescent males, age 7-11. Reliability was assessed by test-retest of 41 prepubescent males (X age 9.3 years, SD + 1.2). A mean body density value of 1.053 gm/cc (SD + .011) was found during both trials. A correlated test revealed no significant difference (P> .05) between the two trials . A correlation of .99 was also observed between body density values o f trial one and trial two. Validity was established by hydrostatically weighing 21 college-age students (X age 20.7 years, SD .t 1.4) both the standard technique and proposed modification. Mean body density values of 1.056 gm/cc (SD + .O17) and 1.057 gm/cc ( -SD -+ .017) were found by these two techniques. A correlated 2 test revealed no significant difference between the two methods. A correlation of 1.00 between the body density values obtained by the two techniques was also reported.

Book Description
The purpose of this investigation was to develop multiple regression equations to predict body density in prepubescent males using the Harpenden, Lange, and Fat-0-Mate%- skinfold calipers. The subjects were 59 males aged 7-11 years (y = 9.3 +/- 1.2), body weight of 34.5 kg (28.4), height of 139.9 cm (210.5) and body density of 1.0506 gm/cc (t.0128). Variables assessed included 12 skinfold sites, 8 body circumferences, 7 body diameters, residual volume (via closed circuit oxygen dilution) and the Jensen modification of hydrostatic weighing. Independent variables for each caliper were anterior thigh, triceps and abdominal skinfolds (Harpenden): anterior thigh, biceps and abdominal skinfolds (Lange) I and anterior thigh, biceps, calf and abdominal skinfolds (Fat-0-Meter) with multiple R's of .93, .93 and.-94 respectively (all (all p

Book Description
Updated for its Fourth Edition with increased art and photos, this undergraduate exercise physiology textbook integrates basic exercise physiology with research studies to stimulate learning, allowing readers to apply principles in the widest variety of exercise and sport science careers. The book has comprehensive coverage, including integrated material on special populations, and a flexible organization of independent units, so instructors can teach according to their preferred approach. Each unit is designed with a consistent and comprehensive sequence of presentation: basic anatomy and physiology, the measurement and meaning of variables important to understanding exercise physiology, exercise responses, training principles, and special applications, problems, and considerations. Plowman & Smith provides a consistently organized, comprehensive approach to Exercise Physiology with excellent supporting ancillary materials. Its ability to relate up to date research to key concepts and integrate special populations makes this book ideal for classroom use.

Book Description
Designed for undergraduate course work, this exercise physiology textbook unites research and theory with real-world application so students can easily relate to the concepts being presented. The unique applied approach fully engages you in discovering how the human body works and responds to exercise. You'll not only gain a solid foundation in exercise physiology concepts, you'll also learn how to apply these concepts on the job to optimize athletic performance and well-being. Moreover, you'll come to understand the vital health benefits of exercise and physical activity for all individuals at all ages, including special populations. Beginning with basic exercise physiology concepts, the text progressively builds your knowledge by integrating these concepts into practical discussions of nutrition and training. The text stresses a research-based approach, enabling you to locate and evaluate the evidence you need to make good decisions. Numerous examples further underscore the importance of basic concepts and research in addressing real-life challenges in exercise and athletic training.

Book Description
This book is the compilation of papers presented at the International Symposium on In Vivo Body Composition Studies, held in Houston, Texas, November 10-12, 1992. The purpose of this conference was to report on the state-of-the-art techniques for in vivo body composition measurements and to present the most recent human data on normal body composition and changes during disease. This conference was the third in a series of meetings on body composition studies held in North America, and follows the successful meetings at Brookhaven National Laboratory in 1986, and the one in Toronto in 1989. A large number of excellent research papers were offered for consideration at this Conference which demonstrates the rapid growth of the field in the last three years. However, we had to limit the presentations to approximately 90 papers which provided a broad spectrum of the applications and recent interest in the subject. The proceedings of the Brookhaven meeting "In Vivo Body Composition Studies", is published by The Institute of Physical Sciences in Medicine, London. The proceedings of the Toronto meeting "In Vivo Body Composition Studies" was published by Plenum Press in its basic life science series. Both these meetings placed more emphasis on technical aspects while the current Houston meeting tried to emphasize more the emerging clinical applications of these techniques. The general sessions used at the Conference for presentations forms the basis of the order of appearance of the papers in this book.
