Introduction : La presente these etudie la relation entre l'adoption d'une methode contraceptive et differents facteurs sociodemographiques. La difference de choix selon l'age a bien ete etablie mais plusieurs questions subsistent notamment le lien entre contraception et position sociale. Notre objectif etait de decrire les caracteristiques sociodemographiques des femmes qui utilisent un moyen de contraception plutot qu'un autre au cours de leur vie, afin d'expliquer ces differences de pratiques. Methodes : Le choix de la methode contraceptive en fonction de diverses caracteristiques socio demographiques a ete etudie a partir de donnees tirees d'un echantillon de 9670 femmes agees de 18 a 40 ans. Une analyse multivariee par regression logistique a permis l'identification des facteurs associes a leur moyen de contraception. Resultats : La pilule est de loin le contraceptif le plus utilise (51%), devant le sterilet (24%) et le preservatif (17%). La pilule privilegiee par les plus jeunes, nullipares s'est banalisee dans toutes les categories socioprofessionnelles. Le sterilet, quant a lui, est choisi par des femmes de plus de trente ans, ayant atteint le nombre d'enfants souhaite. Il est considere comme moyen privilegie des femmes ouvrieres. This book examines the nature and significance of the impact of population growth on the weIl-being of developing countries-in particular, the effects on economic growth, education, health, food supply, housing, poverty, and the environment. In addition, because family planning programmes often significantly affect population growth, the study examines the impacts of family planning on fertility and health, and the human rights implications of family planning programmes. In considering the book's conclusions about the impact of population growth on development, four caveats should be noted. First, the effects of population growth vary from place to place and over time. Thus, blanket statements about overall effects often cannot be made. Where possible, the authors note the contexts in which population effects are strongest and weakest. Second, all of the outcomes examined in this book are influenced by factors other than population growth. Moreover, the impact of population growth may itself vary according to the presence or absence of other factors. This again makes bl anket statements about the effects of population growth difficult. Throughout the chapters, the authors try to identify other relevant factors that influence the outcomes we discuss or that influence the impact of population growth on those outcomes.

Bolokoli, khifad, tahara, tahoor, qudiin, irua, bondo, kuruna, negekorsigin, and kene-kene are a few of the terms used in local African languages to denote a set of cultural practices collectively known as female circumcision. Practiced in many countries across Africa and Asia, this ritual is hotly debated. Supporters regard it as a central coming-of-age ritual that ensures chastity and promotes fertility. Human rights groups denounce the procedure as barbaric. It is estimated that between 100 million and 130 million girls and women today have undergone forms of this genital surgery. Female Circumcision gathers together African activists to examine the issue within its various cultural and historical contexts, the debates on circumcision regarding African refugee and immigrant populations in the United States, and the human rights efforts to eradicate the practice. This work brings African women's voices into the discussion, foregrounds indigenous processes of social and cultural change, and demonstrates the manifold linkages between respect for women's bodily integrity, the empowerment of women, and democratic modes of economic development. This volume does not focus narrowly on female circumcision as a set of ritualized surgeries sanctioned by society. Instead, the contributors explore a chain of connecting issues and processes through which the practice is being transformed in local and transnational contexts. The authors document shifts in local views to highlight processes of change and chronicle the efforts of diverse communities as agents in the process of cultural and social transformation.
