Book Description
Excerpt from Designing and Construction of Storage Reservoirs Before entering upon such considerations as affect the selection of reservoir sites and their construction, a brief allusion to some of the most ancient works for impounding water may not be uninteresting. Of these the most prominent examples are undoubt edly to be found in Hindostan, Where the magnitude and antiquity of the storage Works cannot fail to arrest attention. These great Works, surpassing in their immensity What are conventionally esteemed to be the wonders of the world, the production of other countries and nations, took their ori gin in the necessities of the people and the variableness of the climate of India, andwere, in fact, great public' works on which the welfare of the people mainly depended. The climate of India, although singularly uniform in some respects from year to year, is remarkably variable as regards the rain fall; and in order to guard against the dis asters of famine and sickness, inevitably attendant on a scanty monsoon, the native princes were wont to make such provisions as large resources and an almost unlimited power enabled them, in order to obviate the difficulty that they had to contend with. Indian Storage Reservoirs With Earthen Dams
Author: William Lumisden Strange
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781333249854
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 502
Book Description
Excerpt from Indian Storage Reservoirs With Earthen Dams: Being a Practical Treatise on Their Design and Construction The fact is that in the case of earthen embankments we are dealing with a material which is unsatisfactory and unreliable unless carefully treated, whereas, if it is properly utilised it has peculiar advantages of its own and is permanent to an eminent degree, as some of the oldest works in the world testify. Such embankments are, moreover, the cheapest structures whereby water can be stored, and they are particularly suitable for the employment of the large amount of unskilled labour which is available in ordinary times in India, and for which work has to be found in times of scarcity. I have therefore described in detail the precautions which it is most desirable to take - precautions which involve careful supervision rather than greatly increased expenditure. Naturally, they are needed more in the case of large and important works than in that of small and relatively insignificant ones.
