In this project, a hypersonic airbreathing cruise missile is designed through an optimization process. The main use of this futuristic weapon technology is to be employed against enemy ships while being launched from an Mk-41 VLS launcher, the most widespread VLS in the world. In this optimization process and for this type of missile, Genetic Algorithms and Monte Carlo simulations are used to find an optimal solution for the rocket booster engine, the scramjet engine, aerodynamics and warhead sizing. With this data, trajectory, stability and manoeuvrability is studied to determine the performance of the missile. Other aspects concerning the missile materials of the airframe and dome are discussed on a qualitative way and no structural analysis is studied within this project. It should be noted that hypersonic weapons are mature technologies, and the only information about them are research papers regarding their aerodynamics and propulsion systems. Then, the only built hypersonic vehicles are experimental, meaning that the baseline data to start design process scarce. This brings a great challenge to this project, where creativity and the use of analytical expressions for rapid missile synthesis and conceptual design is a must. On the other side, due to the complex behaviour of hypersonic flows, this adds difficulties to our research since most of the methods employed are numerical, which can be calculated easily on a CFD in the final stages of the design, but they are not fast enough to be implemented on the initial stages of design. The final results prove that the methods employed for initial sizing are accurate enough to model a CAD design which can be used as a baseline for future research in this technology. To conclude with, the final results obtained with the algorithms helps us to understand the effects on design, especially when flying at high Mach numbers where the classical configuration of airframe, wings and tail must be radically redesigned to more aerodynamic efficient bodies such as Waveriders. Regarding to the optimization process, objective functions were changed manually to find better results at each iteration of the optimization process but better techniques such as local search methods used in artificial intelligence could be employed.

Hypersonic missiles--specifically hypersonic glide vehicles and hypersonic cruise missiles--are a new class of threat because they are capable both of maneuvering and of flying faster than 5,000 kilometers per hour. These features enable such missiles to penetrate most missile defenses and to further compress the timelines for a response by a nation under attack. Hypersonic missiles are being developed by the United States, Russia, and China. Their proliferation beyond these three could result in other powers setting their strategic forces on hair-trigger states of readiness. And such proliferation could enable other powers to more credibly threaten attacks on major powers. The diffusion of hypersonic technology is under way in Europe, Japan, Australia, and India--with other nations beginning to explore such technology. Proliferation could cross multiple borders if hypersonic technology is offered on world markets. There is probably less than a decade available to substantially hinder the potential proliferation of hypersonic missiles and associated technologies. To this end, the report recommends that (1) the United States, Russia, and China should agree not to export complete hypersonic missile systems or their major components and (2) the broader international community should establish controls on a wider range of hypersonic missile hardware and technology.

This paper focuses on the application of advanced design methodologies developed by Georgia Tech's Aerospace Systems Design Laboratory (ASDL) to the conceptual design of a hypersonic air-breathing ship-to-surface cruise missile. This approach uses an integrated, parametric environment, that brings more physics based knowledge into early phases of design, thus allowing the designer to have a thorough understanding of the entire design space. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and probabilistic methods allow the designer to then generate a field of designs, instead of just one point design. A High Speed Standoff Missile (HSSM) was required to deliver a 250-lb warhead to time critical targets with a stationary dwell time between five and fifteen minutes, at a range of up to 1,500 km. The primary drivers for a successful design were shown to be minimum time to target, affordability, and compatibility with the Vertical Launch System (VLS) currently used on many of the United States Navy's cruisers and destroyers. Included is an explanation of the physics based tools used to perform the various disciplinary analyses, and their use to construct metamodels allowing for design space exploration and robust design simulation, as well as a quantification of the uncertainty in the design parameters.

This unique book examines the feasibility of hypersonic weapons and aircraft as global strike options in the 2035 timeframe. The paper proposes there are currently two limitations or gaps in U.S. prompt global strike capabilities; timeliness, and increasingly the ability to gain access to the highly-defended target area. Additionally, the USAF has a long history of using advanced technology to stay ahead of the threat defense systems and gaining access to target sets, and by 2035, anti-access and area denial (A2/AD) technologies will increasingly threaten the USAF ability to hold any target on the globe at risk. Therefore, given the fact that technologies will continue developing to diminish and deny the advantages of stealth and space assets, could speed once again allow access to denied, heavily defended targets and close the gap for prompt global strike by 2035? The analysis begins with a brief overview of past hypersonic programs and reveals the lack of coherent government policy or USAF confidence in future military utility for hypersonic weapons or aircraft. The paper explores evidence that recent developments in threat radars along with future predictions for processing power and passive detection techniques will diminish the inherent advantages of stealth. Additionally, the Long Range Strike (LRS) family of systems, most likely the main global strike option in 2035, does not provide a prompt global strike solution, and a subsonic bomber could still be denied entry to some future A2/AD environments. After a thorough operational analysis of future concepts and a look at the current advances in hypersonic technology, this paper concludes there are feasible military missions for hypersonic cruise missiles and aircraft in the 2035 timeframe. Hypersonic missiles and strike or reconnaissance aircraft could fold into the LRS family of systems; providing deterrence, prompt conventional global strike, HDBT attack, and critical ISR missions in A2/AD environments.
