Book Description
Relive one man's dedication and determination to increase the quality of life for residents in east central California from the early 1900s through the Depression years. You'll meet and fall in love with Father John J. Crowley--a monumental man in his devotion and faith in God, his determination to fight for causes that would better the common man, and his vivacious attitude toward life. Until now, the story of one of the California desert's most dominant figures of the early twentieth century was fated to slip into anonymity. Here you'll discover his devotion to the spiritual and economic welfare of the people in the Owens Valley and Death Valley regions through vignettes told by his parishioners, friends, and relatives. Many of Father Crowley's weekly "Sage and Tumbleweed" columns enrich this historical account by glimpsing into his thoughts and actions. This intriguing biography will engage historians, people of all faiths, and lovers of true literary prose. It will revive your spiritual and community allegiance while entertaining you with the story of a real man among men.--From publisher description.

Water and Power
Author: William L. Kahrl
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 0520907418
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 605
Book Description
It is not the purpose of this work to propose a specific format for the settlement of the city's current difficulties with the valley, to resolve the environmental questions associated with Los Angeles's proposed groundwater pumping program, or to promote any cause associated with the developing situation in the Owens Valley. But by performing the essential historical task of separating what happened from what did not, and by distinguishing in this way the choices which have been made from those which have yet to be decided, it is my hope that this effort will help to establish that common basis for understanding which is essential for the debate over specific issues to proceed most effectively. This book, then, is scarcely the last word on the Owens Valley conflict: the final chapter, after all, has yet to be written. The story that has emerged here is at once very different and more troubling than the conventional treatments of the conflict as a simplistic political morality play. Any attempt to deal with so controversial a subject, however, is almost certain to spark controversy itself. For that reason, with the exception of a small collection of private letters, this work is constructed entirely from the published documents and other materials available to the general public, anchoring the narrative in sources the reader can consult to trace the line of my argument on any point with which he or she may disagree. In addition, the work as a whole has been reviewed for technical accuracy by officials of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, although the department is in no way responsible for the content of this study or the conclusions drawn from it.

Captains of the Soul
Author: Michael Gladwin
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1922132535
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 328
Book Description
Known affectionately as ‘Padres’, chaplains have been integral to the Australian Army for a century. From the legendary William ‘Fighting Mac’ McKenzie, whose friendships with diggers in the trenches of Gallipoli and France made him a national figure in 1918, to Harold Wardale-Greenwood, who died caring for the sick while a POW on the brutal Sandakan ‘death march’ in July 1945, this book assesses the contribution of Australian Army chaplains in conflicts and peacekeeping missions, in barracks and among service families. Drawing on a wealth of original archival material and little known published sources, Captains of the Soul represents the first comprehensive account of Australian Army chaplains. It surveys their changing role and experience from the Great War of 1914–18 to the recent conflict in Afghanistan; charts the evolution of the Royal Australian Army Chaplains’ Department across its first century; and addresses the significance of Army chaplaincy for Australia’s military, religious and cultural history. It is a story of personal conviction and selfless devotion.

Walking in the Mud
Author: Phil Volker
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1666719552
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 381
Book Description
After facing a life-changing cancer diagnosis, Phil Volker started walking a circuitous route around his ten-acre backyard. It was a chance to exercise, which his doctors had encouraged, but also created a sacred space to think and pray. Realizing that he was covering quite a distance, he found a map of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route and began to map his progress, calculating that 909 laps would get him from St. Jean Pied-de-Port to the Cathedral of St. James. Volker completed five caminos, five hundred miles each, without leaving his backyard, and many visitors have found healing, solace, and consolation in walking with him. Phil's life was transformed by what he calls his three Cs--Camino, Catholicism, and Cancer. Part spiritual autobiography, part pilgrimage journal, and part Old Farmer's Almanac, this book is the story of his journey.
