Spengler prophezeit massive Umweltprobleme, die Ausrottung unzahliger Tierarten sowie eine zunehmende Aussiedelung der westlichen Industrie in die Dritte Welt. Die Technik hat, nach Spengler, dem Menschen nicht nur die Moglichkeit gegeben die Krafte der Natur zu zugeln, sondern sie hat den Menschen der Natur entfremdet. Moderne Maschinentechnik dominiert unsere Kultur immer starker - auf Kosten des Naturlichen und Organischen. Er prognostizierte auch dass die Menschen im Westen fruher oder spater ihres immer mehr gekunstelten Lebensstils mude werden wurden. Allmahlich wurden sie sich gegen die Zivilisation wenden, die sie geschaffen haben, und sie verabscheuen. Die hochtechnologische abendlandische Kultur sei daher dazu verurteilt, von innen verzehrt zu werden und unterzugehen. Es werde eine Zeit kommen, schreibt Spengler, da unsere Riesenstadte mit ihren Wolkenkratzern ebenso zertrummert und vergessen sein werden wie die Palaste des alten Memphis und Babylon. Bleibt abzuwarten ob diese Prophezeiung, seine schicksalstrachtigste, eintreffen wird. Die vorliegende Neuausgabe ist ein Faksimile der Originalauflage. Oswald Spengler (1880-1936), deutscher Historiker und Philosoph, ist vor allem fur seine Theorie bekannt, wonach Zivilisationen sich nicht linear, sondern zyklisch entwickeln: sie werden geboren, bluhen auf und sterben auf eine Weise, die an lebendige Wesen erinnert. Er entfaltete diese These in seinem Hauptwerk Der Untergang des Abendlandes, das in zwei Banden 1918 beziehungsweise 1922 erschien."
