Book Description
Excerpt from Delaware Archives, Vol. 4 The Public Archives Commission of Delaware herewith submits volumes four and five of the Military Series of Delaware Archives. These volumes contain lists, substantially full and complete, of the officers and men who represented this State in the second war with England, commonly called the War of 1812, which memorable contest sealed a peace between the United States and the Mother Country which has lasted for over one hundred years. In addition to the Muster and Pay rolls, many letters, documents and state papers pertinent and interesting have been included in the publication. When the work of collecting and compiling these records was begun the State Archives contained no Muster or Pay rolls. A number of these papers were found in the War Department at Washington, but the greater number in private possession. The Commission believes that in the arduous work of collecting and publishing these records it has rendered important service to the State. Through the generosity of Mr. Septimus E. Nivin, of Landenberg, Pa., the E. I. duPont de Nemours Co. and others, who had these records in their possession, the State now owns the original papers that attest Delawares great service in this war. Foot notes indicate the source of the papers not in the Archives of the State. All papers marked "duPont Hall of Records" are now in the possession of the State. Explanatory. It was found advisable to publish Volumes IV and V, Delaware Archives Military Series, in advance of Volume III. The latter is now in course of preparation, and will contain supplementary Revolutionary matter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. Book Description
Excerpt from Delaware Archives, Vol. 3 of 3: Revolutionary War Sir, Finding that great impositions are likely to be practised upon the Government (without the possibility of detection, - the original records having been destroyed some years ago) in relation to revolutionary claims to pension under the law of Congress of the 18th of March ultimo; I have the honor to apprise your Excellency that it would be highly desirable for this Department to possess the original, or transcript-pay rolls of the Continental Army belonging to the line of Delaware; together with such other information touching the services of these revolutionary claimants, as your Excellency may suggest, and which perhaps can only be derived from the records of the several Executive officers of the state of Delaware within your control. Book Description
Excerpt from Delaware or the Ruined Family; A Tale, Vol. 2 of 3 The hours flew as lightly at Emberton Park as if they had plucked all the down from the wings of their good father Time, in order to furnish their own soft pinions; and many of the days which intervened between the signature of the bill for twenty-five thousand pounds, given by Sir Sidney Delaware to Lord Ashborough, and the time when it was to become due, slipped away unnoticed. The worthy baronet suffered them to pass with very great tranquillity, relying perfectly upon the word of Mr Tims, that the money would be ready at the appointed period. As comfort, and happiness, too, are far less loquacious qualities than grief and anxiety. Sir Sidney thought it unnecessary to enter into any farther particulars with Burrel, than by merely thanking him, in general terms, for the advice he had given; and by informing him that, in consequence of his son's second journey to London, his affairs were likely to be finally arranged in the course of a month or two. Book Description
Excerpt from Delaware or the Ruined Family; A Tale, Vol. 3 of 3 Beauchamp regarded him; but solely and wholly in relation to Blanche Delaware - or, in short, as the brother of her he loved. When he avoided him, it was because she had rejected his - Beau champ's offered hand; when he placed the money on the table at Emberton, it was, that the clouds which had so long obscured the sunshine of her days, might be scattered for ever; and Henry Beauchamp could no more think of William Delaware, without the connecting link that bound him to his sister, than one can think of the planetary system without the sun.
