Book Description
Debris accumulation at culvert and bridge structures openings is a widespread problem. The accumulation of debris at inlets of highway culverts and bridge structures is a frequent cause of unsatisfactory performance and malfunction. This accumulation may result in erosion at culvert entrances, overtopping and failure of roadway embankments and damage to adjacent properties, increased local scour at piers and/or abutments, and the formation of pressure flow scour. Consideration of debris accumulations and the need for debris-control structures should be an essential part of the design of all drainage structures. Structural and non-structural measures have been used effectively to prevent or reduce the size of debris accumulations at bridges and culverts. Structural measures can include features that: (a) intercept debris at or upstream of a structure inlet; (b) deflect debris near the inlet; or (c) orient the debris to facilitate passage of the debris through the structure. Non-structural measures include management of the upstream watershed and maintenance. This publication provides measures for both culvert and bridge structures. The measures available for culverts are based on the information included in earlier editions of this manual. Selection of a certain debris countermeasure depends upon the size, quantity, and type of debris, the potential hazard to life and property, the costs involved, and the maintenance proposed.

Book Description
Comprehensive account, treating both theoretical and applied aspects of debris flow. The text begins with a discussion of fundamental mechanical aspects, such as flow characteristics, type classification, mechanics, occurrence and development, fully-developed flow and deposition processes. The second part of the book sheds light on the application of theory in relation to computer-simulated reproductions of real disasters. Attention is paid to debris flow controlling structures, design effectiveness and performance, soft countermeasure problems, such as identification of debris flow prone ravines and the prediction of occurrence by the concept of precipitation threshold. The qualitative and fundamental character of this book makes it an excellent textbook for graduate courses in debris flow and it is recommended reading for professionals in engineering, geosciences and water resources who are concerned with mechanics and countermeasures of debris flow. Keywords: stony debris flow, viscous debris flo, landslide induced debris flow, hazard zone mapping, grid type sabo dam.

Book Description
The purpose of these guidelines for investigating geologic hazards and preparing engineering-geology reports, is to provide recommendations for appropriate, minimum investigative techniques, standards, and report content to ensure adequate geologic site characterization and geologic-hazard investigations to protect public safety and facilitate risk reduction. Such investigations provide important information on site geologic conditions that may affect or be affected by development, as well as the type and severity of geologic hazards at a site, and recommend solutions to mitigate the effects and the cost of the hazards, both at the time of construction and over the life of the development. The accompanying suggested approach to geologic-hazard ordinances and school-site investigation guidelines are intended as an aid for land-use planning and regulation by local Utah jurisdictions and school districts, respectively. Geologic hazards that are not accounted for in project planning and design often result in additional unforeseen construction and/or future maintenance costs, and possible injury or death.
