Why debunked political rumors persist and how to combat them Political rumors and misinformation pollute the political landscape. This is not a recent phenomenon; before the currently rampant and unfounded rumors about a stolen election and vote-rigging, there were other rumors that continued to spread even after they were thoroughly debunked, including doubts about 9/11 (an “inside job”) and the furor over President Obama’s birthplace and birth certificate. If misinformation crowds out the truth, how can Americans communicate with one another about important issues? In this book, Adam Berinsky examines why political rumors exist and persist despite their unsubstantiated and refuted claims, who is most likely to believe them, and how to combat them. Drawing on original survey and experimental data, Berinsky shows that a tendency toward conspiratorial thinking and vehement partisan attachment fuel belief in rumors. Yet the reach of rumors is wide, and Berinsky argues that in fighting misinformation, it is as important to target the undecided and the uncertain as it is the true believers. We’re all vulnerable to misinformation, and public skepticism about the veracity of political facts is damaging to democracy. Nazis have launched rebranding campaigns now calling themselves the “alt-right” and “identitarians” and “white nationalists” (because obviously white nationalist is way different than white supremacist and doesn’t really mean the exact same thing). Here in the states our congress approved an accused alcoholic rapist to the highest court in the land with a lifetime appointment, a man nominated by Individual One, as he’s known in court filings implicating him in numerous crimes, who came to be president by working with Russia to meddle in and direct the outcome of our last presidential election. Now, honestly I can’t see how anyone wouldn’t look at the current state of affairs and not think all this stuff is broken or at the very least quite badly damaged and in need of some drastic repairs, but some people (you know who the fuck you are) think things are great. They think there are “fine people” who also happen to be Nazis which, let’s be honest, really are mutually exclusive things. You can’t say “Jim is a great guy! He’s also a Nazi.” , because being a Nazi makes you a not so great guy… I’d even go so far, and I know I’m being bold and controversial here, as to say that being a Nazi makes you a bad fucking person. I know that may be offensive to Nazis and racists, but it’s almost certainly better than being murdered for being alive and the “wrong” skin tone. So yeah, I’m pretty sure all this is broken and if we’re gonna fix it we have to first recognize it and talk about it.
