Normalites: The First Professionally Prepared Teachers in the United States is a new original work which explores the experiences of three women, Lydia Stow, Mary Swift and Louisa Harris, who were pioneers in the movement in teacher education as members of the first class of the nation's first state normal school established in Lexington, Massachusetts in 1839. The book is biographical, offering new insights derived from exceptional research into the development of the normal school movement from the perspectives of the students. While studies have provided analysis of the movement as a whole, as well as some of the leaders of the initiative, such as Horace Mann and Henry Barnard, there is a lack of rich, published information about the first groups of students. Understanding their accounts and experiences, however, provides a critical foreground to comprehending not only the complexity of the nineteenth century normal school movement but, more broadly, educational reform during this period. Arranged chronologically and in four parts, this book explores the experiences of Lydia Stow, Mary Swift and Louisa Harris during their normal school studies, their entrance into the world and commencement of their careers, the transitions in their personal and professional lives, and the building of their life work. Throughout these periods, their formal educational experiences, as well as broader moments of transformation, are considered and how life paths were shaped. This book will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate students and faculty connected to teacher preparation programs. More than 100,000 students are currently awarded baccalaureate degrees each year in Education. Over 80,000 of these students are women. Their experiences are rooted in the pioneering efforts of Lydia Stow, Mary Swift, and Louisa Harris at our nation's first state normal school. Originally published in 1976 Race and Suicide in South Africa synthesises the two dimensions of suicide: the personal and the social phenomenon. Its approach is Durkheimian in the use of court records, and phenomenological in the examination of actual cases. About 1500 cases of suicide in Durban from 1940-70 are analysed in terms of race, sex, occupation, marital status, economic status, family type and size, residential area, time and method used. What emerges is a revealing picture of suicide in South African ethnic groups. The findings confute the idea of Durkheim and others that behaviour in suicide conforms to certain universal principles and suggest the crucial role of particular social conditions in determining suicide trends, while at the same time challenging the proposition that a high suicide rate is associated with high status. Instead the author found that there were common emotional syndromes among suicides, but there were contributed to by different social factors.

This book traces the history of our Maninger family from 1600s Germany to present day America. It contains historical stories and first-person accounts of family events. There's also extensive family tree information on the Maningers and related families. The book is the result of dedicated research and cooperation by several Maninger descendants. Since the 1600s, generations of our Maningers lived in and around the village of Dittwar, Germany. It's a village in a side valley of the Tauber River southwest of Würzburg, Germany. The farms and vineyards sustained the Maningers for generations. By the mid-1800s, economic and military factors contributed to emigration from Europe to the Western Hemisphere. In 1854, Valentine Maninger left Dittwar for America, settling in central Illinois. He plied his trade as a shoemaker, then became a farmer. In Illinois, Valentine met and married Magdalena Smith Neuhauser. Magdalena's family had come from Alsace Lorraine , and had close ties with neighboring families. Those related families lived, worked, married, and worshipped together. In the 1880s, the families moved west together, to Harper County, Kansas. Valentine Maninger's descendants established farms and jobs and businesses in Harper. In the 20th century, succeeding generations found opportunity and work away from Harper. Today the Maninger descendants are widespread.
