This volume sets out to examine the ways in which an equality between the sexes is constructed, conceptualised, imagined or realised in early modern France, a period and a country which produced some of the earliest theorisations on equality. In so doing, it aims to contribute towards the development of the history of equality as an intellectual category within the history of political thought, and to situate "the woman question" within that history. The eleven chapters in the volume span the fields of political theory, philosophy, literature, history and history of ideas, bringing together literary scholars, historians, philosophers and scholars of political thought, and examining an extensive range of primary sources. Whilst most of the chapters focus on the conceptualisation of a moral, metaphysical or intellectual equality between the sexes, space is also given to concrete examples of a de facto gender equality in operation. The volume is aimed at scholars and graduate students of political thought, history of philosophy, women’s history and gender studies alike. It aims to throw light on the history of Western ideas of equality and difference, questions which continue to preoccupy cultural historians, philosophers, political theorists and feminist critics.

La mode féminine est bien plus que de simples vêtements et accessoires ; Tout au long de l'histoire, il a été un puissant outil d'expression, d'affirmation de l'identité et de réflexion des valeurs sociales de chaque époque. Depuis l'Antiquité, les femmes utilisent la mode comme une forme de communication non verbale, transmettant des messages sur leur position sociale, leur statut et même leurs aspirations. Dans ce chapitre, nous explorerons brièvement l'histoire de la mode féminine et comment elle s'articule avec la quête de l'égalité des sexes. L'histoire de la mode féminine remonte aux débuts de l'humanité, où les premiers signes de décorations et d'ornements témoignaient déjà d'un souci de l'apparence et de la différenciation des rôles sociaux entre hommes et femmes. À mesure que les civilisations progressaient, les vêtements des femmes devenaient de plus en plus complexes et diversifiés, reflétant les croyances, les valeurs et les hiérarchies des sociétés dans lesquelles vivaient ces femmes. Au Moyen Âge, par exemple, la mode féminine était fortement influencée par la religion et les attentes sociales de l'époque. Les vêtements des femmes étaient souvent exubérants, avec des corsets serrés et des jupes volumineuses, symbolisant leur position d'ornement social. Cependant, cette opulence était aussi une restriction, car la mode imposait des limites à la mobilité et au confort des femmes. Avec l'émergence du siècle des Lumières au XVIIIe siècle et le début de la révolution industrielle, la mode féminine a connu des changements importants. L'accent mis sur la raison et le progrès social a conduit à une demande accrue de vêtements pratiques et fonctionnels. Le soi-disant « costume d'Amazonie » a gagné en popularité, représentant une rupture avec les robes trop ornées du passé. This book focuses on the departure of Britain’s 'surplus' women to Australia and New Zealand organised by Victorian British female emigration societies. Starting with an analysis of the surplus of women question, it then explores the philanthropic nature of the organisations (the Female Middle Class Emigration Society, the Women’s Emigration Society, the British Women’s Emigration Association, and the Church Emigration Society). The study of the strict selection of distressed gentlewomen emigrants is followed by an analysis of their marketing value, and an appraisal of women’s imperialism. Interrogating supply/demand from an inter- and multi-disciplinary perspective, this collection broadens engagement beyond the routine analysis of the locus of violence in prostitution and the validity of the prostitute's consent. A focus on the supply/demand dynamic brings into play a range of other societal, economic and psychological factors such as the social construction of sexuality, the viability of alternative choices for prostitutes and clients, and the impact of regulatory regimes on the provision of sexual services. The factors which underlie each component of the supply/demand dyad are also studied and an examination is made of their dynamic interrelation. The collection emphasizes the importance of rendering policy makers alert to the evidence emerging from empirical studies conducted in different fields of enquiry, in the hope of moving beyond polarity and politics at the local, national and international level.
