El libro que el lector sostiene en sus manos aborda cómo las deidades prehispánicas fueron transformadas en demonios, proceso analizado desde la pintura mural conventual. A diferencia de otros estudios, el problema de la demonización de los dioses prehispánicos está centrado en las imágenes pintadas en varios conventos de la Nueva España. Durante la evangelización, el Diablo fue una figura clave en la conversión de los indígenas, para inculcar el amor a Dios los frailes utilizaron el miedo al castigo diabólico en el infierno. En la pintura mural de los conventos abundan las imágenes de demonios, pero en algunos casos las figuras de los diablos incorporan elementos propios de la iconografía prehispánica: los evangelizadores decidieron que todos los dioses de los nativos eran demonios y los indígenas habían vivido engañados, de no aceptar la nueva religión sus almas arderían en el infierno, atormentadas por aquellos que habían tenido como divinidades, de allí la necesitad de presentar a los demonios con algunas de las características de los dioses indígenas. El tema del Diablo en la pintura mural no sólo tuvo importancia en territorio novohispano, en el sur del continente también fueron utilizados; por esta razón el último capítulo está dedicado a una somera comparativa de algunos de estas imágenes con las elaboradas en la Nueva España. Este trabajo está dirigido al sector académico, pero también al público en general interesado en el arte virreinal de los indígenas bajo dominio español.
