Ostrowski has long experimented with chromatic hues on white or neutral background, but it took him almost a decade to go back to investigating the scarlet shade--a coloring bearing social and cultural implications, besides playing a fundamental part on the history of painting. Made using found material and canvases painted with acrylic and lacquer, Ostrowski's recent work are an exploration of the absence and presence of the color. The instruments in David Ostrowski's work, beside the canvas itself, are spray paint or materials such as paper, strips of wood, newspapers or cardboard, which he finds in his studio. Often found materials, for instance a piece of cardboard with paint residue, or a single spray-painted line, find their way onto the canvas. Even the dust which the canvas absorbs from lying on the studio floor becomes an element of the composition. When Ostrowski talks about the act of painting, he mentions the inclusion of the error, injecting itself into the work coincidentally and uncontrollably in equal measure, ultimately determining the composition.
