Le caractère océanique de la station échantillonnée est probablement responsable de cette différence. En plus de quantifier les flux verticaux, cette étude a permis de caractériser l'importance de nombreux organismes planctoniques dans le GSL, dont certains sont encore nettement sous-étudiés.
