Author: Katerina Kolozova
Publisher: Columbia University Press
ISBN: 0231536437
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 209
Book Description
Following François Laruelle's nonstandard philosophy and the work of Judith Butler, Drucilla Cornell, Luce Irigaray, and Rosi Braidotti, Katerina Kolozova reclaims the relevance of categories traditionally rendered "unthinkable" by postmodern feminist philosophies, such as "the real," "the one," "the limit," and "finality," thus critically repositioning poststructuralist feminist philosophy and gender/queer studies. Poststructuralist (feminist) theory sees the subject as a purely linguistic category, as always already multiple, as always already nonfixed and fluctuating, as limitless discursivity, and as constitutively detached from the instance of the real. This reconceptualization is based on the exclusion of and dichotomous opposition to notions of the real, the one (unity and continuity), and the stable. The non-philosophical reading of postructuralist philosophy engenders new forms of universalisms for global debate and action, expressed in a language the world can understand. It also liberates theory from ideological paralysis, recasting the real as an immediately experienced human condition determined by gender, race, and social and economic circumstance.

Real Mathematical Analysis
Author: Charles C. Pugh
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9780387952970
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 456
Book Description
Was plane geometry your favourite math course in high school? Did you like proving theorems? Are you sick of memorising integrals? If so, real analysis could be your cup of tea. In contrast to calculus and elementary algebra, it involves neither formula manipulation nor applications to other fields of science. None. It is Pure Mathematics, and it is sure to appeal to the budding pure mathematician. In this new introduction to undergraduate real analysis the author takes a different approach from past studies of the subject, by stressing the importance of pictures in mathematics and hard problems. The exposition is informal and relaxed, with many helpful asides, examples and occasional comments from mathematicians like Dieudonne, Littlewood and Osserman. The author has taught the subject many times over the last 35 years at Berkeley and this book is based on the honours version of this course. The book contains an excellent selection of more than 500 exercises.

Book Description
An astonishing novel about pain, release, and recovery from two-time National Book Award finalist, Patricia McCormick. A tingle arced across my scalp. The floor tipped up at me and my body spiraled away. Then I was on the ceiling looking down, waiting to see what would happen next. Callie cuts herself. Never too deep, never enough to die. But enough to feel the pain. Enough to feel the scream inside. Now she's at Sea Pines, a "residential treatment facility" filled with girls struggling with problems of their own. Callie doesn't want to have anything to do with them. She doesn't want to have anything to do with anyone. She won't even speak. But Callie can only stay silent for so long...

Which Numbers Are Real?
Author: Michael Henle
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 1614441073
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 231
Book Description
Everyone knows the real numbers, those fundamental quantities that make possible all of mathematics from high school algebra and Euclidean geometry through the Calculus and beyond; and also serve as the basis for measurement in science, industry, and ordinary life. This book surveys alternative real number systems: systems that generalize and extend the real numbers yet stay close to these properties that make the reals central to mathematics. Alternative real numbers include many different kinds of numbers, for example multidimensional numbers (the complex numbers, the quaternions and others), infinitely small and infinitely large numbers (the hyperreal numbers and the surreal numbers), and numbers that represent positions in games (the surreal numbers). Each system has a well-developed theory, including applications to other areas of mathematics and science, such as physics, the theory of games, multi-dimensional geometry, and formal logic. They are all active areas of current mathematical research and each has unique features, in particular, characteristic methods of proof and implications for the philosophy of mathematics, both highlighted in this book. Alternative real number systems illuminate the central, unifying role of the real numbers and include some exciting and eccentric parts of mathematics. Which Numbers Are Real? Will be of interest to anyone with an interest in numbers, but specifically to upper-level undergraduates, graduate students, and professional mathematicians, particularly college mathematics teachers.

Super-real Fields
Author: Harold G. Dales
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 9780198539919
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 378
Book Description
Super-fields are a class of totally ordered fields that are larger than the real line. They arise from quotients of the algebra of continuous functions on a compact space by a prime ideal, and generalize the well-known class of ultrapowers, and indeed the continuous ultrapowers. These fields are an important topic in their own right and have many surprising applications in analysis and logic. The authors introduce these exciting new fields to mathematicians, analysts, and logicians, including a natural generalization of the real line R, and resolve a number of open problems. After an exposition of the general theory of ordered fields and a careful proof of some classic theorems, including Kapansky's embedding, they establish important new results in Banach algebra theory, non-standard analysis, and model theory.

Real Analysis and Foundations
Author: Steven G. Krantz
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1498777694
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 431
Book Description
The first three editions of this popular textbook attracted a loyal readership and widespread use. Students find the book to be concise, accessible, and complete. Instructors find the book to be clear, authoritative, and dependable. The goal of this new edition is to make real analysis relevant and accessible to a broad audience of students with diverse backgrounds. Real analysis is a basic tool for all mathematical scientists, ranging from mathematicians to physicists to engineers to researchers in the medical profession. This text aims to be the generational touchstone for the subject and the go-to text for developing young scientists. In this new edition we endeavor to make the book accessible to a broader audience. This edition includes more explanation, more elementary examples, and the author stepladders the exercises. Figures are updated and clarified. We make the sections more concise, and omit overly technical details. We have updated and augmented the multivariable material in order to bring out the geometric nature of the topic. The figures are thus enhanced and fleshed out. Features A renewed enthusiasm for the topic comes through in a revised presentation A new organization removes some advanced topics and retains related ones Exercises are more tiered, offering a more accessible course Key sections are revised for more brevity
