Her new poetry is introspective and personal in tone, but wide-ranging in topic. In poem after poem, she casts her unique imagination and unyielding, observant eye over the landscape of a life carefully and intuitively lived. While many are familiar with Margaret Atwood’s fiction—including her groundbreaking and bestselling novels The Handmaid’s Tale, The Testaments, Oryx and Crake, among others—she has, from the beginning of her career, been one of our most significant contemporary poets. And she is one of the very few writers equally accomplished in fiction and poetry. This collection is a stunning achievement that will be appreciated by fans of her novels and poetry readers alike.

Book Description
"I write hungry sentences," Natalie Diaz once explained in an interview, "because they want more and more lyricism and imagery to satisfy them." This debut collection is a fast-paced tour of Mojave life and family narrative: A sister fights for or against a brother on meth, and everyone from Antigone, Houdini, Huitzilopochtli, and Jesus is invoked and invited to hash it out. These darkly humorous poems illuminate far corners of the heart, revealing teeth, tails, and more than a few dreams. I watched a lion eat a man like a piece of fruit, peel tendons from fascia like pith from rind, then lick the sweet meat from its hard core of bones. The man had earned this feast and his own deliciousness by ringing a stick against the lion's cage, calling out Here, Kitty Kitty, Meow! With one swipe of a paw much like a catcher's mitt with fangs, the lion pulled the man into the cage, rattling his skeleton against the metal bars. The lion didn't want to do it— He didn't want to eat the man like a piece of fruit and he told the crowd this: I only wanted some goddamn sleep . . . Natalie Diaz was born and raised on the Fort Mojave Indian Reservation in Needles, California. After playing professional basketball for four years in Europe and Asia, Diaz returned to the states to complete her MFA at Old Dominion University. She lives in Surprise, Arizona, and is working to preserve the Mojave language.

Book Description
Long Book Description - Usable for WEB text with longer author bio. A book of inspired poetry, "In The Twilight Currents Of Darkness And Light," a Vietnam era veteran gives voice to the current crisis of conscience realized now as "The War On Iraq," a horror born of our personal and collective fear of terrorism. The so called "War On Terror" has become revealed as something else altogether, another ride into the darkness that once gave us Vietnam. What were the lessons of Vietnam? Rather than elaborating the specifics of that tragedy the author explores the soul of a people caught in the currents of a storm that threatens the very soul of a nation. In this collection of poetry, with currents of nature as a metaphor, the author describes the heart of darkness that we find ourselves drawn by. There are currents of darkness, currents of darkness and light and currents of light and in these poems the reader finds a message of hope, that while there are destinies that appear possible, even probable, still there is an underlying current that can carry us to the light. In this age we are at a pivotal point. Are we to find ourselves swept into a sea of darkness from which we cannot emerge, or can we seek to find a current that will carry us out of this darkness and on into the light? These poems become words of hope that do not deny the darkness but rather embraces the possibilities for triumph and joy. No Pollyanna, the author does not flinch from the darker nature of human kind but rather seeks to evaluate adversity as an agent, not of just the depths and depravities of humanity, but the transcendent possibilities of persons. Inspired by his personal struggles with PTSD, the author in a priortime transformed by learning to "see" in a different way. Some of that vision is brought to bare on contemporary events. This is a collection of the poetry of realization of an underlying spirit that flows through the human family. Not a book of history, these are words of feeling and thought pouring forth from a muse that sees the certainty of motion and change in the flow of the human spirit and this collection brings out a voice for hope. This collection is a journey the author undertakes to make sense of so much apparent senselessness. The first titled poem appears before even the table of contents to open with a statement of balance and purpose in all things. When this poem was written, the author had not arrived at clarity on where the journey was to go but began writing having felt the pull of an inner current, vibrant and compelling. In the first chapter, "Currents" the author expands on the metaphor of currents as a means for describing the spirit moving within us. The second chapter, "Currents Of Darkness," addresses the darkened currents, spiritual and historical that we find ourselves in currently. Dragged into an undertow of bleak and savage darkness, are we to drown as the darkness deepens all around us? The third chapter, "Current Of Darkness And Light" poses the juxtaposition of currents of dark and currents of light. In our very darkness still there is the presence of a spirit of lightness that also pulls on us. The possibility of hope becomes clearer and the journey continues in defiance of the dark. The fourth chapter, "Currents Of Light" reveal the spirit of light that is every bit as real as the currents of darkness and that the future is not fixed, is not carvedinto black marble that is impenetrable. The currents of darkness, like the darkest marble, can be etched with a higher meaning for all of us. The fifth chapter, "Vision" explores ways of seeing. In it observation is given to a number of points of focus and the chapter itself becomes a voice for hope, for faith in the transcendent spirit with us that we may choose to move with or may drift away from. In the end the decision for either is very much in the hands of the individual. We are empowered because each of us can see the light.

Book Description
As I write these poems and the stories of others that desperately need to be told, I find strength and desire to give others a voice that do not have one, those that have not found it yet. I write so that you may find hope and access a power in yourself that you didn’t know was there. No matter the season of life, I encourage you to find grace for yourself and confidence in your search for strength within to create something positive with what you have been given. Value yourself with your imperfections because you have a place and have much to offer with the gifts you have. It is okay to rest, to not feel okay, and be right where they are at in the moment—it is okay to be human. The following is a compilation of poems titled “Currents and Tides”. The chapters being “Reef ”, “Low Tide”, “Rip Tide”, and “High Tide” represent landmarks in our life, the highs, struggles, and pains. Each poem in its designated chapter provides insight via stories on how to navigate the waves of that particular season in one’s life. What is your “wave”? How do you face it head-on?
