Pages : 626
Book Description
In recent years there have been rapid strides in our understanding of plate-tectonic processes, many developments in methods of basin analysis, and the accumulation of much new surface and subsurface geological and geophysical data. Projects such as COCORP (in the United States) and Lithoprobe (in Canada) have provided essential insights into the deep crustal structure of the continent. Synthesis of all the available information about North America's geological regions has not been attempted systematically since the "Decade of North American Geology project undertaken by the Geological Society of America and the Geological Survey of Canada nearly twenty years ago. The book commences with a summary of the Phanerozoic geological history of the United States and Canada, illustrated with a suite of new paleogeographic maps, and tying in each of the subsequent regional chapters by the inclusion of numerous cross-references. This followed by a set of fifteen regional syntheses of the principal tectonic regions of the United States and Canada, focusing on the stratigraphic and tectonic history of the major sedimentary basins. Most of these chapters have been contributed by specialists, drawing on their own research, and providing interpretive summaries of a type not previously attempted. - Up-to-date synthesis of the sedimentary/tectonic history of the major areas of the United States and Canada - Up-to-date references - Many new color maps

Geological Survey of Canada, Current Research (Online) no. 2004-C7
Author: Edith Martel
Publisher: Natural Resources Canada
ISBN: 0662371313
Category : Geological time
Languages : en
Pages : 14
Book Description
This report presents findings of a bedrock geological mapping project carried out in 2003 in the Ferguson Lake area, located about 200 kilometres west of Rankin Inlet, Nunavut. The project was initiated to provide better understanding of the geology & deformation history of the area and to put a local nickel-copper-platinum group element deposit into a regional context. The main part of the report describes the rock units exposed in the area (metamorphosed supracrustal rocks and intrusive rocks) and the area's structural elements (gneissosity, folds, foliation, shear zones, faulting). An attempt is then made to correlate the deformational features observed in the area with those documented by other researchers. Finally, implications of the findings for the timing of mineralization are briefly discussed.

Enhancing Student Achievement
Author: Charlotte Danielson
Publisher: ASCD
ISBN: 1416600914
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 158
Book Description
Educators devoted to school reform focus all too often on the isolated components of K-12 education--this is the essential premise of this powerful new book. If we are truly committed to improving our schools, the author contends, then we must focus on the interdependence of variables that affect student learning, both inside and outside the classroom. The book is divided into three distinct parts. In Part 1, Danielson introduces the Four Circles Model to define the criteria for successful school improvement: Everything educators do to help their students learn must be based on what educators want (school, district, or state goals), believe (values and principles), and know (educational research). In Part 2, the author provides a framework for improving schools--including curriculum, team planning, and policies and practices affecting students--and connects every concept to the criteria presented in Part 1. She also provides a handy rubric at the end of each chapter, both as a summary of main points and as a tool for educators to gauge the needs of their school. Part 3 offers readers guidelines on how best to implement the framework using action planning. Brimming with perceptive advice and thought-provoking arguments, this book is both a wake-up call and a roadmap to success for those determined to provide students with the best education possible. Note: This product listing is for the Adobe Acrobat (PDF) version of the book.

Geological Survey of Canada, Current Research (Online) no. 2000-E10
Author: S. Connell
Publisher: Natural Resources Canada
ISBN: 0660182149
Category : Metamorphic rocks
Languages : en
Pages : 9
Book Description
Presents and discusses results of detailed textural examination using scanning electron microscopy on samples from the Giant and Con gold mines, Northwest Territories. The study was a preliminary investigation designed to determine the electrical conductivity mechanisms of the mineralized sericite schist from alteration zones that parallel the gold-bearing quartz veins in the Yellowknife mining district. Results are highlighted for four samples and include schematic representations of rock texture and three-dimensional electrical resistivity. The purpose of the study was to obtain information required to help develop efficient exploration strategies.

Publisher:
ISBN: 9781292021171
Category : Research
Languages : en
Pages : 384
Book Description
For undergraduate or graduate courses that include planning, conducting, and evaluating research. A do-it-yourself, understand-it-yourself manual designed to help students understand the fundamental structure of research and the methodical process that leads to valid, reliable results. Written in uncommonly engaging and elegant prose, this text guides the reader, step-by-step, from the selection of a problem, through the process of conducting authentic research, to the preparation of a completed report, with practical suggestions based on a solid theoretical framework and sound pedagogy. Suitable as the core text in any introductory research course or even for self-instruction, this text will show students two things: 1) that quality research demands planning and design; and, 2) how their own research projects can be executed effectively and professionally.
