Book Description
This report describes the results of a cultural resources survey on 550 acres of lowlands contained in the Miller Island unit of the Klamath Wildlife Area in Klamath County, Oregon. An intensive survey yielded only two isolated flake finds and no items of historical significance within the survey tracts. A review of the ethnographic literature indicates that few prehistoric resources should be expected in the Miller Island unit. Six historic home sites are present within the Klamath Wildlife Area, but all are outside the boundaries of the survey tracts.

Cultural Resources Survey of the Eagles Nest Burn, Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, Harney County, Oregon
Author: Kathryn Anne Toepel
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Archaeological surveying
Languages : en
Pages : 36
Book Description
This report describes the results of a cultural resources survey on 775 acres in the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge which are within the recent Eagles Nest Burn and are being considered for a reseeding project. An intensive survey of the area resulted in the recording of fourteen archaeological sites, several light scatters, and a number of isolated finds. All of the sites contain chert material which appears to occur naturally in the immediate area, suggesting that these sites were probably quarry workshops or chipping stations. Only three of the sites contained grinding tools indicative of plant gathering and processing activities. Projectile points suggest that the earliest use of the area may have occurred as early as 7,000 or more years ago, with the most intense occupation of the area occurring within the last 4,000 years. All of the sites in the project area warrant testing to determine whether they are eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.

California Archaeology
Author: Michael J. Moratto
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 1483277356
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 798
Book Description
California Archaeology provides a compilation of knowledge for archeologists who are not California specialists. This book explains important cultural events and patterns discovered archeologically. Organized into 11 chapters, this book begins with an overview of California's historic and ancient environments as well as the evidence of Pleistocene human activity. This text then examines the glacial and other environmental conditions that would have influenced the origins, adaptations, and spread of the earliest North Americans. Other chapters consider how California's past is relevant to a wider understanding of human behavior. This book discusses as well the perceptions of Central Coast and San Francisco Bay region prehistory that have changed rapidly as a result of intensive fieldwork performed to comply with environmental law. The final chapter deals with the data of historical linguistics, which indicate something of the cultural relationships and events that might have occurred in the past. This book is a valuable resource for archeologists.
