Cryptorchidism
Author: F. Hadziselimovic
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642860206
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 145
Book Description
Ferment, a sign of progress in any scientific field, has previously been lacking in the area of cryptorchidism, where the only activity has been in improving operative methods. Now, however, profound changes in the care of boys with cryptorchidism are being brought about; ideas are arising from a fresh look at comparative anatomy, and histological and experimental observa tions are being supplemented by clinical tests made possible by new hormonal agents. The treatment of cryptorchidism begins with its recognition by the pediatri cian, who until now has shown little interest because of disappointing results from chorionic gonadotropin administration. As for the surgeon, his bent toward restoration of normal anatomical relationships has kept his attention focused on the development of better surgical technics to bring the recalci trant testis into the scrotum. Both specialists have avoided the primordial question of why the testis did not descend properly. If this were known they would treat the cause of cryptorchidism, and not be satisfied merely with trying to correct its end result. As one reads this book, one sees that in most patients cryptorchidism is not caused by some anatomical structure blocking the way or by some deformity of the testis interfering with the transport mechanism. Rather, deficiencies in the hormonal environment of the fetus retard the developmen tal sequences essential to the normal differentiation and descent of the testis. The clinical solution is thus to provide the deficient substances.

ISBN: 111985931X
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 453
Book Description
Advances In Equine Laparoscopy New edition of the only detailed reference devoted to equine laparoscopy, now with new procedures and video clips The newly revised and updated Second Edition of Advances in Equine Laparoscopy is a state-of-the-art reference to all aspects of laparoscopy in equine patients. The book covers skills and instrumentation, standing surgeries, and recumbent surgeries, with new sections describing evaluation of the small intestine, closure of the epiploic foramen, thoracoscopic repair of diaphragmatic hernia, uterine tear repair, ovariohysterectomy, and large granulosa cell tumors. A new companion website features video clips demonstrating the procedures discussed. Each chapter in the new edition has been updated with relevant references produced during the intervening decade. The Second Edition adds 10 new chapters covering techniques and applications developed in the last decade, along with the addition of a section on two-stage procedures. With chapters written by leading experts, Advances in Equine Laparoscopy discusses: The foundations of laparoscopy, fundamental laparoscopic skills, suturing and knot-tying techniques, fundamentals of energy sources, and reusable and disposable equipment Sedation and analgesia in the standing horse, diagnostic techniques, and evaluation of horses with signs of acute and chronic abdominal pain Evaluation of the small intestine, closure of the nephrosplenic space, adhesiolysis, and mesenteric rent repair Peritoneal flap hernioplasty technique for preventing the recurrence of acquired strangulating inguinal herniation in the stallion and inguinal hernioplasty using cyanoacrylate Advances in Equine Laparoscopy is an essential resource for equine surgeons, surgery residents, and interns, especially those interested in minimally invasive surgery and those who are studying for board certification in surgery.

Reproductive Technologies in Farm Animals
Author: Ian Gordon
Publisher: CABI
ISBN: 9780851990491
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 356
Book Description
In the past half century great progress has been made in the reproductive management of farm animals, both mammals and birds. This book aims to review developments and indicate which reproductive technologies can be used commercially or in research. It begins by discussing artificial insemination and how this has recently been refined in semen sexing technology. Embryo transfer, in vitro embryo production technology and the control of oestrus and ovulation are then reviewed. Subsequent chapters consider the control of postpartum ovarian activity, seasonal breeding, multiple births and litter size, pregnancy testing, parturition, and the onset of puberty. The author then describes more recent developments in cloning and the production of transgenic animals, before a final chapter on suppressing reproductive activity.
