Book Description
Cry Slaughter!, first published in 1957 is a fictionalized account of guerrilla life in the central Philippines during the Second World War. Filipino author E. K. Tiempo (1913-1996), himself a member of the Filipino resistance to the Japanese occupation, paints a vivid picture of life under the Japanese, and the difficulties faced in deciding to surrender to the Japanese or take to the mountains and form a guerrilla force. As Tiempo states in the introduction to the book, “Cry Slaughter! was based on actual situations, including the central situation of the shooting of the four envoys by the minister in the story. Many incidents in the novel were taken from They Called Us Outlaws, a non-fiction work which I wrote for the Seventh Military District of the Philippine resistance forces, as part of my work as officer in charge of the historical section. Parts of They Called Us Outlaws, (the Japanese labeled the guerrillas outlaws in those days) were used in the trial of Japanese war criminals in Manila after the war. The original manuscript of Cry Slaughter! was taken out of the Philippines in a submarine in 1943 under cover of a Philippine blackout; perhaps it was the only manuscript to successfully leave the Philippines” during the War.

Book Description
The northeastern seaboard of Canada and the United States, extending from Labrador to Cape Cod, was the first region of North America to suffer from human exploitation. Farley Mowat informs extensive historical and biological research with his direct experience living in and observing this region. When it was first published more than 20 years ago, Sea of Slaughter served as a catalyst for environment reform, raising awareness of the decline and destruction of marine and coastal species. Today, it remains a prescient environmental classic, serving, now as ever, as a haunting reminder of the impact of human interest on the natural world.

She experienced a brief period of comfort in a caring foster home before being plunged into the dark, terrifying world of a 1960s institution. St Anne's Convent, Orpington, was a Catholic children's home run by the infamous Sisters of Mercy and a former monk who inflicted bizarre and barbaric beliefs and practices on the children in his care. Cry and You Cry Alone is the achingly honest story of a survivor of shocking child abuse that took place in the heart of an English suburb.

Book Description
By Xi Xi, part of the first generation of writers raised in Hong Kong, a wise and amiably written book of autobiographical fiction on the author’s experience with breast cancer—from diagnosis to treatment to recovery—and her passage from a life lived through the mind into a life lived through the body. In 1989, the acclaimed Hong Kong writer Xi Xi was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her semi-autobiographical novel Mourning a Breast is a disarmingly honest and inventive account of the author’s experience of a mastectomy and of her subsequent recovery. The book opens with her putting away a bathing suit. As the routine pleasure of swimming is revoked, the small loss stands in for the greater one. But Xi Xi’s mourning begins to take shape as a form of activism. Addressing her reader as frankly and unashamedly as an old friend, she describes what she is going through; finds consolation in art, literature, and cinema; and advocates for a universal literacy of the body. Mourning a Breast was heralded as one of the first Chinese-language books to cast off the stigma of writing about illness and to expose the myths associated with breast cancer. It is a radical novel about creating in the midst of mourning.

Book Description
The attack on Pearl Harbor, which precipitated the Greater East Asia War and its initial triumphs, aroused pride and a host of other emotions among the Japanese people. Yet the single year in which Japanese forces occupied territory from Alaska to Indonesia was followed by three years of terrible defeat. Nevertheless, until the end of the war, many Japanese continued to believe in the invincibility of their country. But in the diaries of well-known writers -- including Nagai Kafu, Takami Jun, Yamada Futaru, and Hirabayashi Taiko -- and the scholar Watanabe Kazuo, varying doubts were vividly, though privately, expressed. Weaving archival materials with personal recollections and the intimate accounts themselves, the author reproduces the passions aroused during the war and the sharply contrasting reactions in the year following Japan's surrender. These entries communicate the reality of false victory and all-too-real defeat.
