Book Description
The purpose of this bibliography is to serve as a medium for informing those interested about the contents of books and articles which have thus far appeared dealing with the above-mentioned three cultures. Anthropology here is used in its widest sense: Physical anthropology, ethnology, cultural anthropology, archaeology and ethno history. l In view of the fact that Kennedy's bibliography has recently been brought up to date,2 a few words of explanation to justify this bibliography are necessary. This work attempts at completeness, that is to say, the items (especially found in missionary journals) which have been overlooked by those who did the splendid job of revising Ken nedy's bibliography, have been included here. Only those items which the present compiler was not able to get hold of have been left unannotated. In other words nearly every item listed here has been read or skimmed through. Moreover those pieces which have hardly any value or relevance to these cultures but which, none the less, are found listed in Kennedy (e. g. Buys under Nias) have been precluded from consideration here. Likewise those (few) articles dealing with modern developments which were uncovered have been listed here as well, contrary to the policy taken by the compilers of Kennedy's revised edition. Needless to say the debt one owes to these compilers for such a work as this - indeed for almost any research which one undertakes dealing with Indonesia - is untold.

Primate Ecology and Conservation: Volume 2
Author: International Primatological Society. Congress
Publisher: CUP Archive
ISBN: 9780521310123
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 420
Book Description
The survival of primates in their natural habitats is of growing concern to primatologists, ecologists and conservationists. In this volume, research on feeding behaviour, nutrition and digestive physiology from captive and wild primates is presented. Correlates of the habitat and social organisation are discussed, and then integrated with the pressing problem of how to conserve primates. Broad issues of confrontation between human and non-human primate populations are considered in the light of conflicting priorities for land-use and development. The increased knowledge of what primates require for their survival is applied to problems of captive propagation as a means of reducing dependence on exploiting wild populations. The papers presented in this volume will stimulate discussion between ecologists, conservationists and those concerned with land-use management to establish realistic policies for primate conservation.

Society and Exchange in Nias
Author: Andrew Beatty
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 352
Book Description
The island of Nias in Indonesia is renowned for its 'feasts of merit'. In pursuit of prestige and a noble title, a Nias chief must slaughter scores of pigs and give away a lifetime's wealth. Based on two years' field research, this book gives an account of kinship and ceremonial exchange in a village of the interior. The first part introduces a unique form of marriage alliance which represents, arguably, a link between elementary and complex social systems and has important implications for kinship theory. The second part contains perhaps the fullest account to date of the feast of merit, a widely-occurring Southeast Asian institution. Andrew Beatty's analysis sheds new light on the relation between gift exchange, status, and power, and he gives equal attention to the pragmatic and ideological concerns of the participants. Through case histories and ethnographic description he shows how exchange is involved in all that is most fundamental to life in Nias: the acquisition of prosperity, the creation of alliances and networks of support, the promotion of rank and prestige, and the assurance of salvation.
