El estallido de la crisis deja a la vista que la autorregulación del mercado es un mito y que el capitalismo, además de generar desigualdad y ser ecológicamente insostenible, resulta intrínsecamente inestable e ineficiente. Al mismo tiempo asistimos a la expansión de iniciativas económicas distintas a las capitalistas. Nos referimos a la llamada economía social o solidaria: cooperativas, grupos de consumo responsable, bancas éticas... Todas ellas nos demuestran que existen otras formas de producir, consumir y financiarse regidas por lógicas democráticas, sostenibles y solidarias, y que además son lo suficientemente resistentes para que muchas logren sobrevivir en un medio tan hostil como son el mercado y la sociedad capitalistas. La tesis de este libro es que estas iniciativas constituyen embriones de otra economía más justa, democrática y sostenible, una economía entendida, como la producción y distribución de los bienes y servicios necesarios para una vida digna, teniendo en cuenta las limitaciones de la naturaleza. Para la economía social y solidaria, la presente crisis debe ser interpretada, sobre todo, en clave de oportunidad. Oportunidad para crecer; oportunidad para transformar las reglas del juego económico; oportunidad, en fin, para abrir un debate social sobre los objetivos de la economía y para explorar alternativas económicas que superen tanto el totalitarismo del mercado como el totalitarismo estatal.

The global financial crisis has led to a new shop-floor militancy. Radical forms of protest and new workers’ takeovers have sprung up all over the globe. In the US, Republic Windows and Doors started production under worker control in January 2013. Later that year workers in Greece took over and managed a hotel, a hospital, a newspaper, a TV channel and a factory. The dominant revolutionary left has viewed workers' control as part of a system necessary during a transition to socialism. Yet most socialist and communist parties have neglected to promote workers' control as it challenges the centrality of parties and it is in this spirit that trade unions, operating through the institutional frameworks of government, have held a monopoly over labor history. Tracing Marx’s writings on the Paris Commune through council communism, anarcho-syndicalism, Italian operaismo, and other "heretical" left currents, An Alternative Labour History uncovers the practices and intentions of historical and contemporary autonomous workers’ movements that until now have been largely obscured. In Constructing Twenty-First Century Socialism: The Role of Radical Education, Motta and Cole explore the role of the politics of knowledge and pedagogy in the reinvention of socialism for the twenty-first century. Through a critical analysis of Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela they deconstruct the mechanisms of neoliberal control as an epistemological project of monologue, closure, and violence against all 'others'. The authors develop an affirmative engagement with the traditions, practices, and politics which seek to challenge this closure through the policies of the counter-hegemonic government of Venezuela, the struggles of social movements in Brazil and Colombia, and the daily resistance of critical educators working in formal educational settings in all three countries. This mapping and analysis not only contribute to struggles for alternatives to capitalism in Latin America, but are translatable to other contexts. The book theorizes that with the exhaustion of neoliberalism, it is time to pedagogize the political and politicize the pedagogical in order to create worlds beyond capitalism.
