Book Description
Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Field Trip Guidebooks Series, Volume 119. This field guide is divided into four chapters for the purpose of introducing the general geological background to each of the major themes that will be addressed during the trip. The first theme concerns lacustrine sedimentation as exemplified by the exposures of the Eocene Green River Formation in Nine Mile Canyon, Utah. The particular facies included in the trip are deltaic and shallow lacustrine and one of the reasons for including these stops is to evaluate similarities and differences between sedimentary processes in large lakes and shallow marine environments. The second theme focuses on Upper Cretaceous coastal and shallow marine rocks as displayed by exposures in the spectacular Book Cliffs of Utah. The shelf and shoreface sequences seen in these rocks represent some of the classical exposures of such facies in the United States. Due to high rates of sediment yield from the nearby actively uplifting Cretaceous Sevier orogenic belt, the Mesaverde Group in the Book Cliffs is dominated by regressive sequences, punctuated by regionally extensive unconformities.

The Geology of Stratigraphic Sequences
Author: Andrew D. Miall
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662033801
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 436
Book Description
Sequence stratigraphy represents a new paradigm in geology. The principal hypothesis is that stratigraphie successions may be subdivided into discrete sequences bounded by widespread unconformities. There are two parts to this hypothesis. First, it suggests that the driving forces which generate sequences and their bounding unconformities also generate predietable three-dimensional stratigraphies. In re cent years stratigraphie research guided by sequence models has brought about fundamental im provements in our understanding of stratigraphie processes and the controls of basin architecture. Sequence models have provided a powerful framework for mapping and numerieal modeling, enabling the science of stratigraphy to advance with rapid strides. This research has demonstrated the importance of a wide range of processes for the generation of cyclie sequences, including eustasy, tectonics, and orbital forcing of climate change. The main objective of this book is to document the sequence record and to discuss our current state of knowledge about sequence-generating processes.

Book Description
' this volume represents perhaps the best available report on state-of-the-science cretaceous research. Some may query the wisdom of grand schemes such as the GSGP, believing that science is best left to the imaginative individual. This useful volume offers a persuasive counter-argument. That it speaks with many voices (if not languages) is to be expected and indeed adds to its strength.' Cretaceous Research 11, 1990
