This qualitative research study used critical narrative inquiry methods to investigate the experiences of TRIO Upward Bound Program alumni during their program participation, and to explore how those experiences, according to participants' own accounts, influenced their creation of a college-college going culture in their households for their own children. TRIO Upward Bound is a federally funded college access program that serves first-generation, low-income high school students, providing support and motivation to pursue higher education. Study participants were alumni of TRIO Upward Bound Programs in the state of Ohio who have earned a baccalaureate degree or higher, and are now the parents of college-enrolled or college-graduated children. The theoretical frameworks utilized in these analyses were cultural and social capital, and funds of knowledge. Study participants described receiving assistance with their high school-to-college transition, academic support, and mentoring through their participation in Upward Bound. They also shared that Upward Bound exposed them to experiences that increased their cultural and social capital, building upon the funds of knowledge they had received from their parents and other family members. The participants further recounted how they used their Upward Bound Program experiences to shape college-going cultures in their homes, and create pathways into higher education for their children. Implications for practice involving student recruitment, alumni connections, and creating college-going cultures are detailed, as well as implications for policy that include increased funding for TRIO Programs, participant tracking beyond six years after high school graduation, and changes in federal reporting structures.

Higher education is the dream of many Latinx students for multiple reasons. Many Latinx students and families believe that by achieving academically, it will open many opportunities for their future. A growing number of Latinx students in the state of California is significantly increasing. College attendance is a generally accepted goal of most students and families. A study by the US Department of Education found that more than 80% of students indicate that they plan on obtaining a college degree (2002). Other studies found that these aspirations were consistent regardless of race, social class, and gender or achievement level. Many factors account for these aspirations: (1) Changes in the US economy from one based on industry to one focused on service, information and technology increased the importance of a college degree; (2) A significant earnings gap between high school graduates and those with a college degree continues to grow; (3) Societal norms have also grown to expect post-secondary training or college; and (4) Federal and state programs designed to encourage college attendance, provide financial support for students. While families want their children to attend college, not all families have the same capacity to successfully plan for college. High schools and their feeder middle schools have emerged as critical conduits of information for both students and families. The components of a comprehensive college readiness program are clear. ACT (2005) identified several practices that help prepare students for college. Others suggest that college readiness is more than selecting the right courses and identifying financial support. David Conley in a report prepared for the Gates Foundation suggests that a range of cognitive and metacognitive skills are perhaps more important than specific content knowledge. Such skills "include analysis, interpretation, precision and accuracy, problem solving, and reasoning" (Conley, 2007).
