Book Description
"Since the early 2020s, the entire world has been in panic and confusion due to the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. To protect ourselves from the virus, national borders have been closed and people have been ordered to stay home. The world was practically isolated under martial law. The global lockdown caused a total social and economic disruption. After the events that have happened today, we need to be prepared for further changes that will soon affect our lives. This book summarizes the Covid19 pandemic in general, warning us of the dangers it poses beyond the disease. The loss of freedom enjoyed by the western world could be at risk if governments do not moderate authoritarianism and follow the terrible example of countries that do not know or enjoy such freedoms. We save lives but preserve our lifestyle"--

Impact of Covid-19 on the Careers of Women in Academic Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Author: National Academies Of Sciences Engineeri
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 9780309268370
Category : Political Science
Languages : en

Book Description
The spring of 2020 marked a change in how almost everyone conducted their personal and professional lives, both within science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) and beyond. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global scientific conferences and individual laboratories and required people to find space in their homes from which to work. It blurred the boundaries between work and non-work, infusing ambiguity into everyday activities. While adaptations that allowed people to connect became more common, the evidence available at the end of 2020 suggests that the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic endangered the engagement, experience, and retention of women in academic STEMM, and may roll back some of the achievement gains made by women in the academy to date. Impact of COVID-19 on the Careers of Women in Academic STEMM identifies, names, and documents how the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the careers of women in academic STEMM during the initial 9-month period since March 2020 and considers how these disruptions - both positive and negative - might shape future progress for women. This publication builds on the 2020 report Promising Practices for Addressing the Underrepresentation of Women in Science, Engineering, and Medicine to develop a comprehensive understanding of the nuanced ways these disruptions have manifested. Impact of COVID-19 on the Careers of Women in Academic STEMM will inform the academic community as it emerges from the pandemic to mitigate any long-term negative consequences for the continued advancement of women in the academic STEMM workforce and build on the adaptations and opportunities that have emerged.

Economic Resilience and Pandemic Response
Author: Agnieszka Rzepka
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040099424
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 283
Book Description
The COVID-19 pandemic upended our social and economic lives. Lockdowns forced firms to implement health and safety protocols, employees to work from home, and businesses of all sorts to close. Even as lockdowns eased, the landscape of work, commerce, leisure, and education was irrevocably transformed. While in many ways life has returned to normal, many of the changes wrought by the pandemic are here to stay. This book presents research on these transformations, examining how the economy and society were impacted. Organizing different aspects of the pandemic into individual chapters, this book examines issues such as financing structures, liquidity, profitmaking, investment, financial security, and market valuation, among other topics. Reflecting deep research as well as an extensive review of the literature, each chapter provides not just theoretical and empirical insight but also a set of policy recommendations to insure against similar crises in the future. Encompassing a range of case studies, it outlines strategies for dealing with the manifold challenges of today’s business environment. This book showcases the development of particular sectors over the course of the pandemic, and as such, serves as a valuable study, enabling a comprehensive analysis of topics ranging from economics to social dynamics. It provides a deep understanding of this unique period's wide-ranging challenges and transformations and underscores the central economic concern of the pandemic's effect on economic security, a topic discussed throughout several chapters. Furthermore, it includes a discussion on the broader scope of “polycrisis". This volume was designed to appeal to a wide range of readers interested in economics, management, regional studies, and related fields.
